2013 The Mariners seemed to have an endless supply of pitchers like Pryor in 2012: 11 different relievers threw at least 20 innings, and the worst ERA among them was Steve Delabar’s 4.17. Pryor was one of seven who struck out at least a batter per inning, and one of 10 making less than a million bucks. Relievers are so interchangeable! Not Pryor, though. Pryor is going to be a cut above the rest, perhaps as soon as the moment you finish this sentence. Besides high-90s heat, he’s now throwing a low-90s cutter that has replaced his slider. Double-A and Triple-A hitters were helpless—not one squared him up enough to trot around the bases—and, after he joined the big-league bullpen, no Mariner (besides Delabar, who's gone now) had a better whiff rate on pitches inside the strike zone. His mistakes were less forgivable to major-league hitters and he still needs a pitch they'll chase. But plus-plus fastballs are 96 percent of high-leverage relief work, and Pryor’s got one.
