YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 The Cardinals made Cox—a polished, college third baseman—their first-round pick in 2010, even though they knew that their hot-corner incumbent, David Freese, could block the University of Arkansas product down the road. Freese’s development into an All-Star made Cox expendable at the trade deadline, allowing Larry Beinfest to nab him for contract-year setup man Edward Mujica. Cox has yet to solve the upper minors, but he projects as a potential glove-first regular and could get a taste of the majors this summer.
2012 The 25th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Cox struggled after making the jump to Double-A Springfield in late May. He hit .180/.239/.250 in June before finding his stroke in the last two months, posting a second-half line of .335/.388/.500. Cox led Springfield with 20 errors in just 93 games, and questions remain about both his defensive range and his power potential. Signed to a major league contract worth $3.2 million, Cox could qualify for a fourth option year in the unlikely event he does not reach St. Louis sometime before 2014. He’s likely to begin 2012 in Springfield, but a mid-season call to Memphis is a possibility.
2011 A first-round pick last year, Zack Cox was signed at the deadline to a multi-million-dollar big-league deal and made his debut in the AFL. He showed patience and advanced hitting skills that make him an on-base threat with gap power. Scouts don’t expect him to become much of a home-run threat, doubt his ability to be a plus defender at third base, and dislike his pudgy physique. Of course, that’s a lot of hypothesizing based on a month in the desert.
