BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 Matt Sczcur revived hopes of a fourth-outfielder future with a good season in Triple-A, but remember: "Men in general are quick to believe that which they wish to be true."
2015 Matt Szczur's speed and solid defense make up for a lack of power; if the hit tool plays up, he could develop into a strong fourth outfielder.
2014 A former football wideout at Villanova, Szczur continues to use his blazing speed to run down gappers and flash a plus outfield glove, but the rest of his game is still a work in progress. He makes contact, uses his legs to reach base and isn’t allergic to ball four, but his stolen base totals and success rate have declined and he’ll never develop enough power to profile as a major-league regular. Still, his rare combination of speed, defense and consonant-rich surname could earn him a few years on a major-league bench.
2013 Physically gifted but underdeveloped as a baseball player because of a devotion to college football (a tune all too familiar to Cubs fans), Szczur hit well in his second season at High-A but struggled after a promotion to Double-A. Inexperience aside, Szczur has been old for his level whenever he's had success, and some aspects of aging aren't about experience, they're about body. An old 23—he was born a few weeks too late for us to call him a 24-year-old—he has a limited window in which to put it all together.
2012 Szczur (“Caesar”) is one of those prospects who elicits ratings all over the scale—even within BP, there's a szczism about him, with Kevin Goldstein omitting him entirely from his Cubs prospect list while Jason Parks had him in the team's top five. Two things are certain: He has blinding speed and great hand-eye coordination. To date, he hasn't translated his wheels (rated by some as an 80 skill) into either impact baserunning or impact fielding in center field. He's not expected to hit for power or to improve his throwing arm much, and he doesn't draw many walks. But he'd also been splitting his efforts between baseball and football until recently, he went to a cold-weather college, and he's still young, so there's time for him to tip the scales in his favor.
2011 Villanova product Matt Szczur came to the Cubs in the fifth round, bringing blazing speed and a Chicago-friendly consonant-heavy surname (it's pronounced "caesar"), but his preference for football may put him out of the picture no sooner than he appeared in it.
