2016 To look at him, you'd think of Rupp as someone who would profile as more Ryan Doumit on offense than, say, Jose Molina: an imposing, barrel-chested figure who would accidentally hit 15 homers on his way through a season. Instead, despite his stature, Rupp has only been a modest power hitter, save for a seven-homer eruption (please don't stop reading) in August. With passable blocking and receiving skills to go with his near-exceptional arm, the Texas product seems poised to be no worse than a big-league backup for at least a few years, especially as the Phillies prepare to shed The Artist Formerly Known As Carlos Ruiz. Being merely good enough with the bat won't be good enough forever, as the Philly system currently boasts a handful of catching prospects whose defense could match Rupp's, but who bring superior offensive projection. For now, though, he'll likely split time nearly 50-50 with Ruiz until one or the other distinguishes himself or finds his way off the roster.
2014 The Phillies have had trouble bringing catchers through their system. The career arcs of Jason Jaramillo, Lou Marson, Sebastian Valle and Tommy Joseph haven't gone as expected, and they traded away the one catcher, Travis d'Arnaud, who still looks promising. They now hope Cameron Rupp can succeed Carlos Ruiz where others have failed. Rupp started 2013 at Double-A and worked his way up to a brief cup of coffee in September. He'll provide a low average with moderate power, and he plays adequate defense to boot. Rupp will start 2014 at Triple-A, but he will be the big club's first line of defense in the event of an injury.
