2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 In his first full season in the Rockies organization after coming over from Cleveland in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade, White proved less hittable and less susceptible to the long ball but struggled to throw strikes and miss bats. Recalled from Triple-A in early May, he was sent back toward the end of June thanks to poor command. The 2009 first-round pick features a heavy two-seam fastball that induces grounders, much like former Colorado right-hander Aaron Cook, but sometimes relies too much on his slider. In short, he's much the same pitcher he was in his University of North Carolina days, and the Astros will be the third organization to attempt to get him to make the refinements he needs (read: throwing the ball over the plate and trusting his stuff) to translate his abundant talent into major-league results.
2012 White came over in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade and got torched in his first trip through the National League. Cleveland's 2009 first-round pick served up home runs at a rate that would make Ken Dixon blush, finishing fourth on the Rockies in homers allowed despite not making his debut until August 23. The five he surrendered in a September 10 contest against the Reds tied for the most allowed in a game by any MLB pitcher in 2011. White never had gopheritis in the minors, so this could be nothing more than an adjustment period. Assuming he and the Rockies can work through those initial struggles, White should develop into a solid mid-rotation starter.
2011 The Indians' top pick in 2009, White reached Double-A in his full-season debut and pitched well there, but scout' opinions are still mixed as to his upside and his future role. White is a unique pitcher who primarily throws a fastball and a split-fingered fastball. Both are plus pitches, with the pure heater scraping 94 mph and the split adding plenty of confusing tumble, but with no dependable third pitch (he's working on a slider) and no horizontal aspect to his game, some see him as a future late-inning reliever as opposed to a successful starter. White will remain in the rotation until the results say otherwise, and could even reach the big leagues late this year.
2010 White entered the spring as one of the top college pitchers in the draft, but he didn't quite live up to expectations, which dropped him to the middle of the first round. Some scouts aren't really sure what to make of him, as he has two plus pitches in his 92-95 mph fastball and darting split pitch, but that's a unique combination that leaves some to wonder if he isn't just a power reliever in the end. He's going to miss bats, we just don't know in which role, yet. Knowing that 200 innings are more valuable than 75, Cleveland will begin his career in the High-A rotation.
