2005 One thing the Mets do a better job of than their cross-town rivals is filling the bottom of the roster. Bottalico provided good low-leverage relief after spending most of 2003 in the minors, and even moved into a set-up role in the second half. His year was a bit fluky in that he had a very low home-run rate for a flyball pitcher, so expecting a repeat of that ERA is optimistic. He's a free agent.
2003 After being barely acceptable in 2001, Ricky Bottalico led the parade of veteran reliever disasters in the 2002 Phillies bullpen before going down to season-ending surgery. He should have entered the point of his career where he won’t get another guaranteed contract, but the Phillies inexplicably offered him arbitration.
2002 Bottalico provided the worst return on the three major relief investments Ed Wade made last off-season, which was as much due to injury as to his performance on the mound. When he was healthy, Bottalico was a quality middle reliever: not a guy to whom you should pay millions of dollars, but an asset in the bullpen if his price is reasonable.
2001 A lot was made of the fact that Ricky Bottalico’s ERA was below 2.00 in outings of two innings or more, a statistic that ignores a huge selection bias: Bottalico would stay in the game to pitch a second inning only if he had thrown well in the first. He terrified Royals fans all season with his taterrific tendencies (surrendering five homers to first batters faced), but his RRE value--one of Michael Wolverton's metrics--was the highest on the team. While it wouldn’t have been a terrible decision to bring him back, the Royals will be better served by taking a chance with their youngsters. Bottalico signed with the Phillies and could close for them once Jose Mesa fails.
2000 Physically, he's supposedly fine, but his 1999 gave no reason to believe he's going to get back to where he was. While you could say the Cardinals got the better part of the deal with the Phillies because Bottalico pitched and Brantley didn't, he was probably the majors' worst closer. It seems obvious he's pressing, and LaRussa isn't the type of steady hand who will make it easier for him to settle down. He’s been non-tendered by the Cardinals, making him a free agent.
1999 A disaster of a season for Bottalico and the Phillies, who had an opportunity to trade a closer in the midst of a pennant race and wound up keeping all three (Leiter, Bottalico, Gomes) and winning nothing. Bottalico is allegedly 100%, although he never showed it in September. He's now the Cardinals' problem.
1998 An honest-to-goodness stud closer, he slumped through the summer months under constant speculation that he was on the trading block. He came thatclose to going to Seattle, but Piniella wanted an AL guy. His address secured, he blitzed through September.
1997 One of the most dominating pitchers around, he took over the closer’s role last year and converted 34 of 38 save opportunities. His hit ratios are astounding; opposing batters are hitting just .182 off him in two of the most offensive-minded seasons the league has known.
1996  He'd been touted for two years, and in '95 he arrived, even more fearsome than advertised. Bottalico's a flamethrower, mixing in the slider in classic Gossage style. Although Podres has tried teaching him a change, you won't see much of it.
