2010 Vazquez was the closest thing the Pirates had to a major acquisition in the 2008-09 offseason, as he signed a two-year, $4 million contract as a free agent. Even with such modest standards in play, he managed to disappoint, which was predictable enough given his Texas-generated park power and a hip-hoppity career-high .349 BABIP in 2008. Worse yet, he was found to be so wanting on defense that the Pirates became hesitant to play him at short, and even after dealing away both starting middle infielders, turning to Vazquez as a starter seemed inconceivable. Vazquez's utility as a utilityman who can only play second and third seems decidedly unfascinating, but he's under contract, so he'll stay, if not play.
2009 So, you're wondering what a MI is, and that's short for middle infielder; call a guy a MINF and infielders or moms might take offense. It might seem strange that Vazquez elected to go to Pittsburgh as a free agent, but after getting punted before by other teams, a guaranteed $4 million probably trumped sorting out who else has to move and who plays where. It's a sensible choice for both player and team: he's not really a regular or a third baseman, and he's never again going to hit .300 or slug .500 and get people all worked up the way he did for a couple of months with the Rangers.
2008 Last year, Vazquez ended up with the most major league playing time he's had since 2003 thanks to the rash of injuries that hit the Rangers' infield. That's his value: he can play all over the place and he's better than Jerry Hairston. It was enough to fetch him another one-year deal for 2008.
2007 Vazquez would like to be like Hector Luna, only he`s a few years older and an even weaker hitter. Still, a left-handed bat with a patient approach and defensive versatility can pick up Triple-A contracts for years to come. It sure beats working at Sears--something that Vazquez perhaps failed to consider when he bitched after being optioned by the Indians. Signed to a minor league contract by the Rangers with an invite to spring training, Vazquez can put off showcasing those Kenmores for another year.
2006 Acquired straight-up for Alex Cora in early July, Vazquez appeared in just 12 games for the Indians. A poor defensive shortstop and a hitter without much power, Vazquez`s value lies in his willingness to take ball four. Absent other useful skills, that`s small consolation. With other things on their minds, the Indians re-signed Vazquez to a one-year contract to be their futility man for 2006.
2005 A decent little stopgap at short when they had no better options, Vazquez stepped aside for Khalil Greene in 2004, and should now function as a workable utility man for the next couple years. He's a better player than he showed in '04, and a much better bargain than the contracts doled out to the likes of Neifi Perez and Juan Castro the last couple years. He'll be a useful utility guy for the Red Sox.
2003 Vazquez was kind of considered the lesser of two options in the Seattle chain, so the Padres were able to get him, and he’s worked out very well. Defensively, he’s become a very steady and reliable glove with pretty good range. With the bat, he’s hitting for average, a little pop, and drawing some walks. It’s not inconceivable that given the opportunity to play every day, he could be the best of a mixed lot at shortstop in the NL this coming season, depending on where Rich Aurilia plays, and which incarnation of Edgar Renteria takes the field. Of course, that’s also assuming that Vazquez isn’t playing second instead.
2002 Vazquez put up good numbers in Triple-A, improving both his power and plate discipline. He continued to play good defense, although he rushes throws from shortstop, sometimes before he’s entirely planted, at the cost of accuracy. He’d be a natural at second base, and if he can get on Boone’s weight-training program, look out. Traded to the Padres in the Davis deal, he should combine with D'Angelo Jimenez to form a great young double-play combination.
2001 Meet the new Jose Flores. He has more sock and is better defensively than the old one but doesn’t walk as much. Since the Mariners never gave Flores a second thought for a utility infield job, I doubt they will Ramon Vazquez. On a more optimistic note, if somehow his surname became a generic word, it would be worth 141 points in Scrabble were the second “z” to land on a Triple Word Score.
1998 A reasonable shortstop prospect, not as talented as the Arqui Pozos that have come and gone. There’s a wide range of opinions about his defensive ability, and when that happens, expect the player to move to an easier position. Of course, in this organization, shortstops might have a little trouble breaking into the lineup no matter what.
