2005 Trujillo is a soft-tossing Padres refugee who compensates for decidedly below-average velocity with a funky submariner delivery that has baffled right-handed hitters from the independent leagues to Triple-A. He's a poor man's Chad Bradford, which tells you how slim the margin for error is among this subset of pitchers. Trujillo is 90% the pitcher Bradford is, but that's often the difference between a long career in big league relief and life in the minors.
2003 Front foot. Repeatedly and without fail. Trujillo’s a finesse righty who throws a lot like Doug Jones. Changeups and sliders away, and then the occasional sneaky fastball, maybe at 83–88 mph, on the inside half when no one’s looking for it. He’s worked this formula hard, and he’s been successful with it. He’s a candidate for the middle of the bullpen if he can get everything together in Triple-A to start the season. It’s very strange to see guys swing and miss late on 84-mph fastballs, but Trujillo makes it happen.
2002 Very few minor-league closers have become factors in the major leagues, but given the wide-open nature of the Padres' bullpen going into 2002, Trujillo could work himself into the picture with a hot start. He’s a submariner who keeps hitters off their game despite not posting great strikeout numbers.
