2013 Pittsburgh may have drafted Black as a starter out of Dallas Baptist University but they didn't wait long to move him to the bullpen. Nine starts, to be exact. It took until he reached Double-A for the transition to take, but it was worth the wait. He more than doubled his career appearances total and posted the second-best strikeout rate in the Eastern League. His fastball sits in the mid-90s and his slider is a worthy knockout pitch. Factor in the coolness of his name and Vic Black has the makings of a lockdown reliever. He still needs to tighten his control, but you could see him in the majors late in the 2013 season.
2010 Hard-throwing Victor Black was taken in the supplemental first round of last year's draft from Dallas Baptist, and many scouts feel he could reach the majors quickly if the Pirates make him a reliever.

2014-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)When it comes to saves in 2015, can you please rank the following. Vic Black, Josh Fields, Zach Putnam, Junichi Tazawa. Thanks dude.
(Corey from San Jacinto)
Putnam, Fields, and Black, Tazawa with the caveat that anything can happen between now and ST 2015. If you're looking for fluidity, Chicago and Houston are better place to go than Boston (sounds like they might bring back Koji Uehara) and New York (Mejia is OK if he's healthy, and Familia looks like a solid back-up plan). (Mike Gianella)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)What do you think about Ken Giles and Vic Black? Saves opp in August and Sept?
(Chris from Siem Reap)
Both situations are fluid, I think Giles takes over if Jonathan Papelbon gets moved, and Vic Black might just take that job in Queens. I would put more stock in Giles but both could see saves. I like both guys. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)What current non-closing RP gets the most saves ROS?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Joakim Soria, Ken Giles, Vic Black, a random White Sox reliever. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)Enjoying the chat, thanks. Q. National Leaguer with one or fewer saves who is mostly likely to have seven by the end of the year?
(gerrybraun from san diego)
Vic Black, Santiago Casilla, Alex Torres, Brad Ziegler. And I like Addison Reed but I can see them pulling the plug for a bit. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who has more saves this year? Cody Allen or Vic Black? Thanks
(Vic from Baltimore)
Black, but I believe in Axford this year so that definitely influences this pick (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any good non-closer RP that should be targeted in NL only for $1?
(craneplace from The Present)
In NL-only for $1 you really could grab a number of quality middle relievers and be happy. If you're asking from a saves perspective, I like Vic Black on the Mets, Mark Melancon on the Pirates and Pedro Strop on the Cubs. I don't know if any of those guys will go for $1, but they could get saves. A.J. Ramos is another guy who could be a "post-hype" saves guy and pick up a few or get the job if Steve Cishek gets traded or is ineffective. (Mike Gianella)
