BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2016 Ruf is nearly 30 years old, with numbers that have declined in various samples since his 2012 debut, but a large swath of Phillies fans would still have you believe there is huge power and production potential in his bat. It may be that nothing teases the mind quite like the promise of power, especially on a club as tater-starved as the Phils have become. Still, Ruf remains in playing-time purgatory, as Ryan Howard still occupies the one position Ruf can be counted on to play without bleeding runs. There is the increased likelihood of a straight platoon for 2016, as Howard continues to decay against lefties and new management becomes less loyal to the old guard. For his part, Ruf did absolutely tune up left-handers in 2015, and perhaps a stricter diet of southpaws is exactly what the doctor ordered to help prettify his numbers. Still, a corner player entering his 30s without a lengthy ledger of success is one on unsure footing, and Ruf's best hope at being an every-day player for the Phillies is almost completely reliant upon Howard's eventual fate, for better or worse.
2015 Were you one of those people who got really excited about Ruf's 38 homers in 2012? Do you now realize your error? Have you learned anything? Do you promise not to do it again? Have you read the Andy Wilkins comment in the White Sox chapter yet? Ruf strained his oblique and broke his wrist in his age-27 season, moving him one year further from his Double-A "breakout." When healthy he mashed lefties and darned near went hitless against righties, though all samples good or bad come with size-related caveats. He might still carve out a role as the short side of a platoon with Ryan Howard or Domonic Brown (or their equivalents on another team), but such chances are limited at his end of the defensive spectrum.
2014 Many expected Ruf to be overmatched by a longer exposure to major-league pitching. He not only held his own, but more or less matched the breakout season of hype machine Domonic Brown. Righties didn't bother him, and he drew walks in a lineup that otherwise doesn't. Curiously, it was lefties who gave him the most trouble, holding him to a .656 OPS in 81 plate appearances, but Ruf crushed lefties in the mnors so consider that more likely fluke than trend. Doubters, though, remain, and the swing-and-miss in his game will make 2014 a year of adjustments. Like Ryan Howard, Ruf has exploitable tendencies; unlike Howard, he doesn't have 80 power.
2013 Ruf was a college draftee in 2009 who was always old for his level, making it tough to get excited about his otherwise quality performances at each stop. Then he made everyone take notice last year with 38 home runs in Double-A, good enough to lead the minor leagues. Of course, it still came as a 25-year-old and thus wasn’t as impressive as Mike Olt hitting 10 fewer as a 23-year old at the same level. Ruf still projects as a slugging minor leaguer with a chance at some cups of coffee in the majors, where every pitch has a wrinkle. But he wouldn't be the first minor-league slugger to fail to translate a gaudy home-run total to the top level. It should say something that in the midst of his huge season, he wasn't promoted to Triple-A. On the other hand, he did get 12 games of java with the big club in September, during which he smacked three homers.

2013-08-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Darin Ruf doing anything for you yet?
(rogero from philly)
I talked to him for 15 minutes or so earlier this week, so he did that for me. Might be writing something about him for next week, but for now I'll say that he seems like a nice guy. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Mike Drop I.Davis for Ruf or M.Saunders.Thanks
(Chesty from New Bern,Nc)
I'd definitely drop Ike Davis in a one-and-done; the batting average has improved but the power isn't there. Michael Saunders is the better all around player, but if pitchers are going to keep throwing Darin Ruf 0-2 fastballs (like they did today), ride the hot hand. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Morosi's prediction for PHI to finish ahead of ATL?
(BOO-URN from parts unknown)
It seems silly, though last year at this time if you told me the Phillies were going to be a .500 team I would have thought you were huffing chemicals. Realistically, the Phillies would need a lot to go right for this to happen. If Roy Halladay returns to Cy Young form, then maybe the Phillies are an 87 win team. At that point, some combination of a breakout by Dom Brown or Darin Ruf, a full, healthy, and productive season by Ryan Howard or Chase Utley and something resembling a 2-3 win season from Delmon Young or Michael Young could make it happen. But it seems to be asking a lot for all of things to happen in 2013. (Mike Gianella)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)in an NL-only 12 team auction league, roughly how would you value Phillies outfielders? It seems crowded with mediocrity, unknowns and worse with Ben Revere, Delmon Young, Darin Ruf, John Mayberry Jr. Domonic Brown and Lance Nix. Any upside here?
(Broken Arrow from Texas)
Revere, Mayberry, Ruf, Brown, 50 feet of crap, Young. In all seriousness, the 1st 2 are the only ones I want to deal with. Ruf went undrafted in LABR which is 29 rounds and 15 teams for a mixed league. (Jason Collette)
2012-12-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Darin Ruf - will he really get some quality AB's this year? What is reasonable to expect from him?
(Rockford from The Hills)
I'm not opposed to the idea of a Schierholtz/Ruf platoon in LF -- is that what's being proposed? Neither guy is gonna light the world on fire, but it's not a terrible option. (Ian Miller)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should Phillies fans be more thankful for Darin Ruf or Cody Asche? And will we ever get to be thankful for Tyson Gillies?
(Governator from Philly)
Ruf over Asche, but don't get too excited about either player. Gillies can really run and play some defense, but he's a fifth outfielder due to lack of plate discipline and power. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)What does it mean when people say Darin Ruf has dead hands?
(Lil' Sebastian from The Barn)
They aren't electric or especially fast or fluid. They are just hands. (Jason Parks)
2012-09-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Darin Ruf has had some good ab's in his limited sample size. Any chance he has a spot out of spring training next year?
(Entheos from NJ)
Thank you for your question, Eutheos. Pretty darn good 20th round senior draft choice for Phillies' Assistant GM/Director of Scouting Marti Wolever. He put up huge numbers at the Phils' Reading affiliate this year, but with Howard a fixture, he is likely going to have to play the outfield to play with the big club in the near future. I saw him at Creighton and a little bit in spring training the last couple years, but could not make an assessment as to whether that would work. I think he is 25 now also. (Dan Evans)
