2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)What do I do with Duda? Even though it took awhile for the power to show up, at least he was hitting for average early. Then the power came and he was good for awhile. Now he's in a massive slump. Do you think he'll come around or should I sell in fantasy?
(Michael from NY)
What do you do with a Lucas Duda

When it's clear he's slumping?

Try to be patient and hope that he'll bounce back

Later in the season.

Yeah, I was all over Duda in most of my leagues (and got lucky in one and traded him straight up for Dallas Keuchel right at the beginning of this slump. I think the talent is there, but Duda is clearly pressing because of the Mets awful lineup and has fallen into some of the bad habits he had last year (a lot of movement pre-swing; not keeping his lower body still/disciplined). He is working on improvements with Mets hitting coach Kevin Long, but that could take time. I think you have to hang on though; if you sell now, you're getting next to nothing in all likelihood. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)I've gotten substantial interest in Dallas Keuchel from several players in my league. What sort of OF should I look for in return? I've been offered Brett Gardner, but that seems a bit light. Judging hitter-pitcher trades isn't easy.
(Matt from Cambridge)
Gardner has done well but that does seem light. Aim not for an elite like Cutch but the next tier down. (Mike Gianella)
2014-09-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does the "strikeout scourge" era make a fantasy $1 pitcher strategy more likely to succeed?
(ssimon from Pelham, N.Y.)
Not necessarily, because the bar has been raised for what makes a fantasy pitcher worthwhile. That said, I've never been a big believer in spending heavily on starting pitching, and the annual emergence of guys like Corey Kluber, Tyson Ross, Dallas Keuchel and Garrett Richards -- among many others -- just re-affirms that for me every year. (Cory Schwartz)
2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul, is Dallas Keuchel a legitimate top 15 starter the rest of the season or is he going to come back down to earth?
(Josh from Boston)
I can't really back him for a low-2.00s ERA the rest of the way, but I do buy into what we've seen. I'd still deal him for more-established arms within that top 15-25 range assuming they were made avaialble (Paul Sporer)
2014-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dallas Keuchel is good, but not sure he's this good. Who are some SPs you would try and target for him? Alex Cobb? Mat Latos if his 1st start back goes ok? Gerrit Cole?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
Yeah, I'd probably take any of those three. I'm a little worried Cobb might still be ailing, so I might actually lean toward Latos and Cole, even though both are DL'd right now. Latos is close to returning and Cole should be back after the minimum stay, while Cobb may be headed for another DL stint if he is indeed still hurt (Paul Sporer)
2014-05-27 11:30:00 (link to chat)Does Dallas Keuchel have a chance to keep up his recent production or is he a sell high?
(jjackhammers from Victoria BC)
Again, a bit of both. The GB% is astronomically high, and the BABIP on those ground balls is well below league average. If he can continue to keep the ball out of the air, and miss bats, then sure, I could see a mid 3's type ERA the duration of the season. He's not going to be as good as he's been, but if someone is irrationally high on him, then try to use him as a stepping stone for a legit fantasy #3. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-05-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Doug: Can you evaluate the relative strengths/weaknesses of the Astro three of Jarred Cosart, Dallas Keuchel, and Collin McHugh. My general take is that Cosart has stuff, but control issues limit his upside, Keuchel seems to have harnessed something to start the 2014 season and from what I've read has his share of supporters at BP, and then McHugh I realize has small sample size, but does he have a chance to sustain some amount of the success of his first two starts or is he reversion waiting to happen. I saw that the Astros pitching coach said that he wasn't the same pitcher in late April that he was in spring trainer. Your thoughts on the three and whether any of them are long-term starters (or bullpen or minor-league bound) are appreciated. Thanks.
(Drifter from Long Branch )
I really like Cosart's baseline mechanics, with average or better grades in every category except for Repetition. But there's the rub, because repetition is by far the most important grade on the mechanics report card, and he won't approach ceiling until he can find consistency with his delivery. He is also a 2-pitch guy, essentially, and though he throws very hard, he will need to refine the cambio if he hopes to find sustained success in the rotation.

Keuchel is an example of a pitcher who is very well-balanced but who utilizes a very slow delivery as part of that approach. The pedestrian pace opens up the chance to mistime his delivery and necessitates a different timing pattern from the stretch. Command is key for a pitcher with a 90-mph fastball, and Keuchel has the underpinnings of a pitcher who will struggle with that element at times.

I have not yet had the chance to watch McHugh, but I'm looking forward to seeing him in action. (Doug Thorburn)
2014-05-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Dallas Keuchel for real? This year's Corey Kluber?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
might be something like that. He seems to have settled on his arsenal (dropped his bigger curve), so you can make the claim that he turned a corner in a couple of regards. (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Dallas Keuchel?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I'm buying! It looks like the Astros have something here. He showed some flashes last year and the command-and-control have really improved this year (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your opinion of Dallas Keuchel? He's off to a good start. Do you think his success will continue?
(cracker73 from Florida)
He had a nice little stretch last year, too. He'll have his duds, so I'd really try to spot him more than anything. (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hi guys! Dallas Keuchel: you buying that he's become a decent starter? I read somewhere he's using his slider more this year and is generating a lot of swings and misses with it. His changeup was already a good pitch.
(howling wolf from Silver Spring MD)
We're all fans of Keuchel, especially as a target in the upcoming supplemental drafts. He's a solid buy candidate at this point, and we went into some depth on him during our mock supplemental draft on last week's episode. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
2014-04-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Dallas Keuchel has much better K and BB numbers so far. Anything new with him or just small sample size theater?
(wendtm from Chicago)
Small sample size theater. He's thrown 18 decent innings, but I don't see how anything has changed from last season. (Matthew Kory)
