2013 Another power arm rising from the Rangers’ minor-league ranks, Mendez joined the organization from Boston in the 2010 Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade. Developed mostly as a starting pitcher, the righty finished last season in the Double-A bullpen. Mendez appears more comfortable in relief, as he can let it fly with his mid-90s fastball, slider, and splitter. His secondary stuff shows promise but needs refinement. Although he made a strong impression with his performance as a reliever in big-league camp last year, he needs seasoning and should spend most of 2013 in the minors, with a possible late-season cup of coffee. A breakout season is possible with his talent.
2012 Yet another power arm developing in the Rangers system, Roman Mendez has the raw strength to emerge as one of the best. Acquired from Boston in the Jarrod Salta-Ralph Macchio trade, the 21-year-old righty has one of the easiest fastballs in the minors, sitting in the mid-90s and touching near triple digits with the casualness of a front yard pitch-and-catch. His secondary arsenal is still a work in progress and his command can come and go, which leads some to believe Mendez’s future role is as a flame-thrower in the ‘pen. Regardless, the recent 40-man addition’s future rides on the back of his near-elite fastball, a pitch that can make a career if he develops and deploys it properly.
