2016 Kansas City collects speedy outfielders with the frenzied abandon of squirrels collecting acorns, so it was no surprise to see the Royals trade for Fuentes back in 2014. A former top pick in Boston, Fuentes is a true center fielder who can make contact, draw a few walks, lash gappers and run like the wind. He doesn't have significant power, but his on-base skills could play at the top of the order. Compared to the other fourth outfielder types in Kansas City's employ, he's younger than Lane Adams, older than Bubba Starling, slower than Terrance Gore, less fluent in Portuguese than Paulo Orlando and less fluent in cool than Jarrod Dyson.
2015 Future spare outfielder Reymond Fuentes floundered at Triple-A, re-established his game in a third stab at Double-A and finished strong on returning to the higher level before a right hip flexor strain ended his season on July 26th.
2014 Coming off a miserable Double-A campaign in 2012, Fuentes focused on improving his two-strike approach and keeping the ball on the ground to exploit his speed. It worked. He made better contact and became a top-of-the-order threat. Despite repeating the level, he was still young for the Texas League. Although his plate discipline took a break in July after he missed 17 games with a hamstring injury and again in a late-season cameo with the big club, overall it was better than in the past. Fuentes cited confidence and mental toughness as keys to his newfound success. The lack of punch suggests a future spare outfielder, but his improvement at such a young age hints at the possibility of something more.
2013 Acquired in the December 2010 trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to Boston, Fuentes needed a late surge to push his OBP and SLG north of .300. He is a gifted athlete with good bloodlines (Carlos Beltran is his cousin) but struggles to make contact and has no usable power. On the plus side, Fuentes has started to draw more walks and last year improved his base-stealing efficiency. The athleticism is real and he was young for his league, but right now he looks like a future fourth or fifth outfielder.
2012 Fuentes, Boston's 2009 first-round pick, came to the Padres in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. An athletic center fielder whose primary selling points as a prospect are speed and the fact that he is Carlos Beltran's cousin, Fuentes hasn't produced at any level. He did raise his walk rate to a still-paltry 7.7 in 2011, but with no appreciable power, this is the Tom Goodwin skill set. Unless he improves in other areas, Fuentes must hit .300 to have value.
2011 Reymond Fuentes is still more tools than numbers. Just 19, the gifted athlete boasts plus-plus speed, a strong arm, and quality defense in center. He profiles as an old-school leadoff type whose batting average and defense would carry the day, though he may still develop slight power thanks to strong, quick wrists. The Padres should be happy with his amalgam of skills whether he develops the power or not.
2010 Carlos Beltran's cousin was seen as the best player in Puerto Rico three weeks before the 2009 draft, then rocketed up to the 28th overall pick after coming stateside for some pre-draft workouts. Fuentes doesn't have his cousin's power, but he can hit for average, burn up the basepaths, and play a very good center field. The total package bears considerable resemblance to that of Jacoby Ellsbury, complete with a similar aversion to ball four. Some felt that Fuentes was overdrafted due to the last-minute hype, but they were largely silenced by his strong debut in the Gulf Coast League.

2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see Reymond Fuentes or Donovan Tate ever bouncing back? You're fielding these questions better than Teixeira at first. Keep it up.
(Brady Childs from Ruston, Louisiana)
I don't. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2012-02-23 11:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a fan of the Adrian Gonzalez trade given how things have played out so far?
(Nickles from San Francisco)
Given that Gonzalez was going to be traded, I'm okay with the return. Rizzo didn't pan out here (although it's way too early to give up on him) and Kelly no longer appears to be an ace-in-waiting. I'm not a big fan of Reymond Fuentes, but he could turn into something. So the question is whether Cashner (acquired for Rizzo), Kelly, and Fuentes are better than the two draft picks the Padres would have received had they let Gonzalez walk. It's impossible to say, but my guess is that they probably are. (Geoff Young)
2012-01-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better chance of making it to MLB - Donavan Tate or Reymond Fuentes?
(Bryant from San Diego)
This might shock you, but I'm going to say Tate. I think he figures it out and makes it. (Jason Parks)
2010-12-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)You support this move for the Sox? Why not let it ride and have a choice of Agonz, Fielder or Pujols after 2011 with no NYY in the mix. I don't know how much money sox save on Gonzalez with the rumored numbers being mentioned.
(SK from DC)
Absolutely. First off, Fielder isn't that great. Terrible defensive first baseman, and really, do we know if he's a pretty good hitter or a great hitter yet? He never seems to be the same thing two years in a row, and he needs to be excellent all the time to make up for that glove. I don't think Pujols is leaving St. Louis--other teams would be in the mix solely to make sure the Cards pay up.

The Cubs love Adrian Gonzalez, and have the money to throw at him in 2012 if he was available. Eight teams inquired about him in a trade, so there is interest there. Anthony Rizzo has no future in the organization if the Sox are acquiring a first baseman anyways, so this is basically trading Casey Kelly and Reymond Fuentes for the rights to Gonzalez in 2011, as well as the right to negotiate with him during the season. I'm very optimistic he'll be signed well before the season is over.

If Boston gets Gonzalez for $22M a year, then this is a steal. Just assume $5M per win for a minute, Gonzalez is something like a $25-30M win player a year. Getting him for less money than Ryan Howard is silly, but I'll take it. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)What have you heard about Reymond Fuentes this year? As a draft pick that was much debated among Red Sox fans I'm interested in getting some perspective on his season.
(Henry Rollins from The wiz)
He's really had a solid year. True CF tools and very good feel for contact. Needs to improve his approach and find a little bit of pop. (Kevin Goldstein)
