YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Brothers, a hard-throwing southpaw, made the big club out of spring training but was banished to Triple-A in May to fix his mechanics as well as his mental approach. Two weeks later he returned and was nearly unhittable in June. Then he hit a stretch where he allowed at least one run in six of eight appearances. As in his rookie campaign, Brothers was tough with men on base. He remained effective against lefties, but right-handed batters had much better success against him last year than in 2011. Brothers has quality stuff but must reduce his platoon split (an effective changeup might help) and gain consistency if he is to take the next step and become a big-league closer.
2012 Brothers throws hard and with spotty command, which is a terrifying combination. Instilling fear in hitters is not a bad thing, although he does need to limit the free passes. Brothers struck out 31 percent of batters he faced in 99 career minor-league appearances. That number jumped to 34 percent in his debut with the Rockies. Opponents hit an unfathomable .118/.259/.191 against Brothers with men on base. If he improves his control just enough to keep batters from waiting him out, Brothers will be a dominant late-inning option now and into the future.
2011 Not to be confused with classical musicians Charles and Christopher Rex, this Rex Brothers was a supplemental pick out of Lipscomb University in 2009 and features a phenomenal fastball that sits in the mid-90s with cutting and sinking action low in the strike zone. Itís a monster pitch that he complements with a sharp slider, a remarkable combo coming from a left-hander, but he has thus far struggled to control both. If he can reduce his walks upon returning to Double-A, he could be in the majors by yearís end, if not sooner, and could be a closer candidate further down the road in the organization that introduced fellow lefty Brian Fuentes to that role.
2010 A sandwich pick in the 2009 draft, Brothers is a hard-throwing lefty with mid-90s heat and a sharp-breaking power slider. The Rockies moved him straight to the pen, where his closer-level stuff was overpowering in his short-season debut. Heíll likely start the year as Modestoís closer, and if he keeps his walk rates low heíll move quickly.

2014-06-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Seriously, the Rockies since 2008 have drafted in the first round Rex Brothers, Christian Friedrich, Tyler Anderson and now Kyle Freeland. All Collee LHP, is this a theme of taking these low-ceiling players?
(Wesley from Utah)
I wouldn't call Freeland low-ceiling. Has legit plus stuff and fills up the zone with it. Good performance arm with the scouting card to back it up.

Have to step away for about 20 mins on a couple of calls. Be back... (Draft Day Chat with Nick J. Faleris)
2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)On the NL side, who are some of the closers that are a year a way?
(Willy from Under the Christmas tree)
Rex Brothers, unfortunately since they're going with Hawkins. Mark Melancon, Tyler Clippard, too.. but most of the closer volatility is in the AL. Nick Vincent is a super-sleeper in SD if he can figure out lefties again like he did in 2012. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Given the volatility of the closers role in baseball, are there a few players you feel may emerge as dark horses during season or maybe even during upcoming spring training? I have seen the cubs fujikawa and a few names in Houston thrown around. Any others you feel may become somewhat relevant or just like in general granted some current closers fail? Thanks Jason!
(joe from CA)
Gregerson, Rex Brothers, Brandon Lyon, Jim Henderson, Al Alburquerquequequque (Jason Collette)
