2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Nick Franklin? Seems like the Rays will be motivated to showcase him soon as part of the Price haul right?
(Friedman from Florida)
I voiced this on TINO, but I don't think he necessarily sees time this year. They were patient with Wil Myers in terms of making sure he was doing the things they wanted before he hit his way to the majors. I don't think Franklin has that type of bat, so he's going to have to be even more refined to make it to the majors. There's not a spot that's ready made for him either, so I'm not sure what their rush would be. I don't think they feel any pressure to do anything but what's best for this team. (Craig Goldstein)
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Nick Franklin?
(Frankie from Brooklyn)
Could be a nice little second baseman. Wasn't nearly enough for David Price (or Franklin and the rest of the package, I should say). (Jeff Moore)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Nick Franklin after the trade? How do you value him and Wilmer Flores now, and if Jesse Chavez moves to the pen is he worth dropping in deep fantasy leagues
(Dale from Detroit)
This is a big help for Franklin, obviously, though he's still going to have to earn his playing time. I'd rank him above Flores, who I don't hate. Yes, Chavez is worth dropping in 16-or fewer-team leagues. Hold on to him in super deep, but that IP count is scary. (Ben Carsley)
2014-07-09 15:00:00 (link to chat)Doesn't Nick Franklin have the same hip problem as Dominic Smith?
(Frankie from Wichita)
The hip drift? Can you snag me a video of Nick because honestly I can't recall. (Ryan Parker)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jorge Polanco just got called up. Worth dropping Nick Franklin for?
(WickedCurve26 from Atlanta, GA)
Depends on the type of league, I guess. Polanco almost certainly won't be up for long this year. (J.P. Breen)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi again, RJ. If you're Alex Anthopoulos and you want the Jays to make the playoffs in 2014 - what's your first player personnel move? Who do you add, who does the addition replace, and how do you pay for the addition (i.e. pay an unsigned free agent? trade from 25 man roster? trade from farm system?)
(Drifter from Long Branch)
Hmmm ... I guess the obvious answers are signing Drew and/or Morales, and promoting Stroman. Trading for Nick Franklin is probably in the same boat, too. I don't think this is likely, and you could argue it doesn't make sense for Arizona, but how about calling Kevin Towers and seeing what he'd want for Martin Prado? Obviously he hasn't started the season well, and he's under contract through 2016, yet he'd give Toronto a legitimate second baseman. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Buff up the old crystal ball and tell us the future of Mr Nick Franklin. There are a lot of teams looking for SS these days and he might be able to handle it. Are the Mariners just trying to rebuild his value a little before a trade?
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
As I wrote in a TA last week, I don't know what the M's are doing with Franklin. Why play him at SS and 2B only, then recall him to use as a super-sub type? I don't know what they're doing. (R.J. Anderson)
2014-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Nick Franklin or Kolten Wong ROS?
(Robert Johnson from The Delta)
Ahh, two of my favorite prospects! Gimme Kolten - has a job right now and better team. Franklin still doesn't have a steady gig even now that he's back up. Now if you need power above all else, then Franklin pulls ahead even with a lack of guaranteed PT (Paul Sporer)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)What are your expectations for Nick Franklin with the M's? It doesn't seem like they'd just throw him in as an everyday outfielder does it?
(Cristobal from Texas)
They should let Franklin play every day - he's better than Morrison (who I know is on the DL), he's better than Almonte, he's probably better than Ackley and I'm not convinced he's worse than Brad Miller, either. It would be cool if they turned him into a Ben Zobrist-type, but that's easier said than done. Wherever he plays, I hope he gets 450 PA, because he can hit 20 homers in that time. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Brad Miller's awful start to the year worrisome? He looked good in ST, and looked good in limited time last season. Is this just a matter of a slow start, or was it all hype the entire time? Nick Franklin being called up can't help either I assume.
(Albert from Dallas)
I like Miller a fair bit, but yeah, he's not played well so far. That said, 63 PAs, so I'm not too worried. The Mariners might not want to play through a slump though, so that could hurt fantasy-wise, but the long-term outlook for Miller is still good player. (Matthew Kory)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)In the same vein as the Springer/Taveras questions-- who are some guys you think will start the year in the minors but would be worth drafting in a 12-team roto keeper league?
(Dave from DC)
If Nick Franklin doesn't get traded and gets optioned, he's an obvious choice. He'll be up at some point and the questions about the glove don't matter as much to us. I mentioned him earlier, but Gregory Polanco is an interesting reserve gamble in this format. Getting guys like this in a 12-team mixed is kind of risky. I know you need keeps, but you're wasting spots sometimes on guys who never make it. Billy Hamilton and Oscar Taveras seemed like great guys like this to gamble on last year and did nothing. Unless they're top of the pops prospects, I tend to avoid these plays in a standard mixer. (Mike Gianella)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)If Nick Franklin is dealt to the Rays, does he get sent to AAA or does he push Zobrist into the OF and start playing 2B?
(Firstname Lastname from College University)
I don't think he gets sent to AAA, Jake. The Rays get pretty creative with their lineups, he'll find time if he gets traded there. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Nick Franklin? Rosterable in a 10'tm dynasty?
(Shawnykid23 from CT)
I suppose. He needs a trade though. Shortstop is a defensive stretch of the imagination and there's this guy they picked up this winter who I hear isn't half bad. (Mike Gianella)
2013-12-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of career can Brad Miller and Nick Franklin carve out and who ends up the better long term player?
(Chris from Phoenix)
Franklin is still likely to have the better long-term career, likely as a solid second baseman. Miller can hit but it's hard to figure out where he'll stick defensively. You don't see too many bat-first utility infielders out there, yet that's what he tends to profiles as.

I will say Miller impressed me last season by thumping David Price a few times. Rare to see a young lefty hang in there like that against Price, let alone do damage. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Nick Franklin worth holding onto as depth (or trade bait) in a 10-team dynasty? 2B and SS can get #dark quick
(Shawn from Office)
It can get very dark, but I don't love Franklin in that shallow of a league. All depends on what your other options are though. (Bret Sayre)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you rank these first-year 2b in order of who will have the best career? Kolten Wong, Scooter Gennett, Nick Franklin, Chris Owings, Wilmer Flores, Jonathan Schoop, Marcus Semien, Grant Green. Thank you.
(The Kernel from Pasadena)
Wong, Owings, Franklin, Schoop, Gennett, Semien, Flores, Green. (Jason Parks)
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)You once said of Nick Franklin that he's a "potential .280+ hitter with 15-20 home runs, tons of doubles, and 10-15 steals." Still see that in him?
(Shane from Boise)
I think he can get there. I may end up being high on the ultimately development of the hit tool, but the rest of his game should come along to around those levels. (Mark Anderson)
2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could Nick Franklin be a 20/20 guy in his prime?
(Shawn from Office)
I think that's a little heavy on him. Big leaguer but more of a second-division guy for me. He'll pop one out once in awhile but the power should be more gap-to-gap, and he'll steal a base every once in awhile but would probably be a 15-20 guy playing every day. (Jason Cole)
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on Nick Franklin's upside?
(Bodhizefa from NC)
One of my favorite interviews over the years. Super kid, high energy, above average fantasy middle infielder when it is all said and done. (Jason Collette)
2013-05-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)It seems we are getting to the call-up portion of the year. Nick Franklin, being one. Long term is he a 15/15/.280 guy? Too lofty goals or is there more upside?
(Charlie from Teesdale)
I assume that's HR/SB/BA? If so, I think home runs is the most ambitious part of that. Safeco is still not a wonderful place to hit. The others seem pretty reasonable. His reduction in strikeouts has been the best part of a very good start to 2013 and should help keep the batting average. (Zachary Levine)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can Brad Miller ever be an everyday player for the Mariners?
(Obafemi from Seattle)
This seems like a good place to answer this one. I really think Miller has a chance and tends to get a little underrated, although he got some buzz with a fantastic performance in big-league camp. The total package might play better at second base than shortstop. But for me, it's closer between Nick Franklin and Brad Miller than most people seem to suggest. I wrote up a scouting report on Miller (with video) here yesterday: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=20424 (Jason Cole)
2013-05-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should Dustin Ackley be worried about Nick Franklin's hot start in AAA?
(John from My desk)
At this point, Dustin Ackley should probably be worried about both Nick Franklin and Brad Miller. I really liked Ackley a lot coming up, but I wasn't alone there. While he's still 25, it sure doesn't look pretty. I haven't been the biggest Nick Franklin guy, but I do think he'd hit better than .226/.294/.328 in a full season right now. The only question is when you decide to pull the trigger on a potential move if Ackley keeps struggling. Don't forget, he was actually pretty good in 2011, but 2012 and the start of 2013 have been ugly. (Jason Cole)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who makes a better addition to the Mariners' infield: Nick Franklin or Brad Miller? Is Jack Z at risk to be fired?
(Josh from Seattle)
I can't think of an argument for Miller so let's go with Franklin.

My guess—and that's all it is—is that Zduriencik's seat is warm if not outright hot. He's had a few seasons now and the on-field product is still lacking. Yes, the farm system has improved but the Mariners, for whatever reasons, have had issues developing players once they reach the majors. They've changed managers once already during his tenure, it's hard to see Zduriencik getting the chance to hire another one. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Re your comment on Nick Franklin vs. Brad Miller, Franklin seems higher on most lists, including BP's, but I'm seeing lots of comments similar to yours. Is that a result of spring results/Franklin's weight gain, a new consensus, or both/neither?
(edwardarthur from Illinois)
Coming into the spring, I had seen more of Franklin than Miller. After watching Miller a lot in camp, I came away with a greater appreciation for his skill-set and I would rank him over Franklin if I was given an opportunity. It's not a dis on Franklin as much as its a step forward for Miller, who really knows how to play the game of baseball. He's a gamer. (Jason Parks)
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Geoff, What do you think the Mariners' infield looks like for most of the season?
(captnamerca from Dunedin)
Howdy Captain. I'm assuming it'll be similar to last year's, with Kendrys Morales displacing Justin Smoak at first base. Nick Franklin could make things interesting at second if Dustin Ackley doesn't get his act together. (Geoff Young)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi, Jason. Welcome to this chat thing here at BP. Do you see the Mariners going out of their way to get Nick Franklin into the lineup ASAP (by trading one of their infielders to put Franklin at SS or 2B) or do you see them taking an approach that at some point an opening will just work itself out? In a related question, do you see Franklin as a better option at SS than Brendan Ryan when offense is taken into consideration or does Ryan's glove make it more likely that we will be seeing a Ryan-Franklin middle of the infield?
(ORWahoo from Tigard)
Thanks! Franklin is a player the M's would like to find time for, and if they do it will be at shortstop in 2013. Ryan may cost a little too much via arbitration, so he could late-winter trade bait. If the M's can secure a veteran backup middle infielder that can push and mentor Franklin, that’s probably what will happen. Best thing that happens to Franklin several times a year is people doubt him. So, in light of that, Franklin is terrible, can't hit and will probably have to move to left field. In terms of value, I think the cost more than pushes things in Franklin's favor. (Jason A. Churchill)
2012-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Someone who seems to be having a heck of a year relatively under the radar is Nick Franklin. Putting aside his injury and illness-marred 2011, he has hit very well in the minors and has stayed at shortstop. What keeps him out of the discussions of the top prospects in the game besides his non-elite defense?
(ORWahoo from Tigard)
The fact that people question his ability to stick at the position at the highest level. The bat is legit; very good offensive tools. I don't see a great hitter, though, and if you remove him from the position, he doesn't profile as a top-end talent. That probably explains why he doesn't appear at the top of prospect lists. (Jason Parks)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Montgomery failed to make your list. Has he lost his prospect hype?
(Ken from Ontario)
A LOT of people some really torn up over two players not being on the list: Montgomery and Nick Franklin. I like Montgomery plenty, but he hasn't been really good since the first half of 2010, and that's a very real concern. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why was Nick Franklin not on the list? Should have easily been in the 60's.
(Steven from Sunny California)
See? (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)I don't hate you for leaving him off, but did Nick Franklin drop out because of his '11 on-field performance (injuries/less impressive numbers than in '10) or because of the lingering defensive position questions and his long swing?
(Rick from Washington)
All of the above. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)I see the multiple choice questions are popular. Nick Franklin or Jason Kipnis?
(myshkin from Santa Clara, CA)
Kipnis. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Do you think Nick Franklin has the ability to stick at SS?
(Mike from Washington)
I do, and I find his power . . . nothing short of shocking. That said, I've seen him wallop plenty of balls in person, and it's no fluke. (Kevin Goldstein)
