YearComment
2013 Acquired for Chris Johnson, who went to the same high school, Borchering piques interest anew as a prospect thanks to the Astros' decision to return him to his prep position: third base. He retains the exciting power potential from both sides of the plate that made him a first-round pick in 2009, but needs to improve in two areas: He needs to strike out less than 30 percent of the time and upgrade his defense to something resembling average. It's unlikely he'll be able to do both this year, given the humbling he endured at Double-A, but he's just entering his age-22 season, so he's still young for his level.
2012 Borchering is still young for his league, but he’s old enough to know the truth: Prospects at his position don’t often post batting averages in the mid-.200s in the minors and live to tell the tale. Last season, the 2009 first-rounder went from being a third baseman who was often referred to as a “future first base type” to a player who actually saw more time at first than at third. That ratio is likely to grow even more lopsided in favor of first in the coming seasons, since Borchering lacks the quickness and strong arm that come in handy at the hot corner. The switch-hitter has a sweet swing and plenty of power, but unless he can make more contact or start walking twice as often, he won’t unseat Paul Godschmidt or distinguish himself from the legion of other corner infielders en route to Phoenix.
2011 Borchering's overall statistics belied his true hitting ability. A first-round pick two seasons ago, Borchering spent the year at South Bend and, after a slow start, showed why many considered him the country's top high-school hitter when he was drafted midway through 2009's first round. He lacked power at the beginning of the season, but found his groove in the second half, hitting .305/.385/.532 in August and September (36 games). Scouts believe that the late-season showing was a more accurate representation of his ability than what came before. However, they still have reservations about his play at third. Even if he does have to move to the more offensively demanding position, given his age and second-half adjustments, it's likely that his bat will play in the majors.
2010 The 16th overall pick in the first round last season, Borchering moved up the draft charts throughout the spring of 2009, and by the time the draft arrived, many thought he was the best high school hitter in the country. A big, switch-hitting third baseman with power and the ability to hit for average, he has true star potential, though that comes with all of the risks inherent in 18-year-old prospects. He seemed a bit overwhelmed in his pro debut, but that's nothing to judge on, and in a weak Arizona system, he's already their top positional prospect.

2011-08-16 17:00:00 (link to chat)What is your opinion of Bobby Borchering? How many years till he's in the bigs?
(Mike from FL)
He's striking out even more than he did last year which is never a good sign for me. 48 XBH is nice in the stat line, but it is the Cal League. Can he make the kind of jump that Goldschmidt did this season coming out of that league? Nah, but in a deep NL league, I take a flier on him. (Jason Collette)
