2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Miggie. With my draft Sunday, I am worried he could not be 3B elig. until the end of April. Who is a good late round 3B to draft in case Miggie misses time?
(chiefsalsa from Utah)
Brent Morel or Ty Wigginton for cheap power. Hopefully, you'll only need them 2-3 weeks. I like Morel, but we're also talking about a guy with one good month in his entire career. (Jason Collette)
2012-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see me out-produce Ty Wigginton? How much is the difference between us and the lineup we are in?
(Wilson Betemit from Baltimore)
Yes. You're four years younger, playing in the more favorable ballpark (Citizens is tough on RH hitters, Camden is great for LH hitters, your strong side), and at least a slightly better defender. Plus you're probably not going to be trying to live up to 1B production, as Wigginton may be if he's the primary 1B in Howard's absence. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-08-17 14:45:00 (link to chat)Skip Schumaker went OF to 2B. Soriano went the opposite way. Ty Wigginton plays every position on the diamond. In general, what is the difference in defensive performance between position players? Would a good defensive 1B like Derek Lee be the worst 3B/2B/SS in the league? Would Torii Hunter win Gold Gloves (and merit them) in his sleep at 1B?
(GM Wannabe from The Front Office)
Not necessarily, because the positions require different skills. Hunter was so valuable because of his range and speed. That doesn't matter at 1B, so while he might be able to field grounders and make Ike Davis catches (the new term for catches where you look silly falling over a dugout rail) it's not like his OF prowess helps him at all. Similarly, Derrek Lee might be agile around the 1B bag, and good at scooping, but can you really see him making plays in the hole between SS and 3B? Certain players excel at certain positions because of what makes them valuable, which would be mitigated by certain defensive switches. Soriano was fast and had a good arm, so going from 2B to LF wasn't a stretch. (Eric Seidman)
2010-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)At the beginning of the season, who could have imagined such a lackluster group of players making up the American League leaderboard for home runs? Is the National League finally catching up in terms of talent?
(psychdoc777 from Chicago)
It's certainly a weird list, isn't it? Not that I don't enjoy seeing Paul Konerko beating off Father Time, again; I expect that career-ending hip issue Tommy Lasorda conjured up more than a decade ago as a matter of CYA is bound to catch up to Konerko someday. For myself, I think it makes for a fascinating question about what's to come. Does anybody expect Jose Bautista to reach 30? He certainly doesn't have to in order to wind up with a career year. Ty Wigginton's doing enough good stuff to keep attention from focusing on "Garrett Atkins, Needless Expense in Cleats" when it comes to journeymen employed as Orioles. But here again, does this mean he's going to double his season tally with more than two-thirds of the season to play? Anybody expect that?

It makes for an interesting proposition as far as who might end up winning an MVP award: One of the Twins' towers? Somebody who has a great second half for a late-charging contender? A pitcher? But I don't take it for a minute to mean that the NL's caught up to anybody--their list of HR leaders is almost as freaky, with Kelly Johnson and Rod Barajas up there. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-12-29 15:00:00 (link to chat)Was it a waste of money for a team with no short-term hope of contention like the Orioles to spend 2/12M on Mike Gonzalez? He'll be gone before the O's are ready to compete.
(eolman from Jerusalem)
It's a very inexpensive contract, and the Orioles' bullpen has sucked for a while, so I don't hate the deal. It makes a hell of a lot more sense than signing Garret Atkins, who is 1) not very good and 2) redundant even at his potential skill set and role because of Ty Wigginton. Gonzalez can at least do something. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would Bonds be a good fit for the Stros the rest of this season?
(Alex from Houston)
They're playing Ty Wigginton in left field, and Geoff Blum is getting the extra ABs. Forget any kind of warmup, sign Bonds, start him tonight, and he'd be better than those choices.

But winning doesn't matter as much as perpetuating the myth. Say, did anyone see that Paul Lo Duca is back in the majors? (Joe Sheehan)
