YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 The Marlins aggressively promoted Kyle Skipworth to Double-A in 2011, and while the former first-rounder has displayed good pop, his whiff-prone approach remains a hindrance through two years in Jacksonville.
2012 It’s difficult to make sense of the Marlins’ decision to jump Skipworth two levels to Double-A Jacksonville, given his youth and ongoing struggles at the plate since turning pro as the sixth-overall pick in the 2008 draft. His batting average rarely crept above the Mendoza line in 2011, and it took a six-game hitting streak at the end of the season for him to hit his weight for the year. A logjam of catchers on the Triple-A and major league rosters could allow Skipworth to spend a second year in Double-A, where, at age 22, he’ll still be one of the youngest players in the Southern League.
2011 The sixth overall selection from 2008 hasn't lived up to his billing, but the power-hitting catcher people hoped for finally became recognizable in the results. Repeating at Low-A in a hitter's park produced happier results than Skipworth's first go-round, but his strike-zone judgment remains almost laughably bad. Happily, he demonstrated much-improved throwing, overcoming some elbow issues from the year before to log a 35-percent kill rate on stolen-base attempts. Skipworth's receiving skills and footwork were never in doubt, so at 21, there is still plenty of time for him to sort out what he shouldn't wave at. With John Buck inked to a three-year deal, the Fish can afford to wait.
2010 Forgive the easy pun, but with batting rates of .208/.263/.345 in 113 career games, Kyle Skipworth might be worth skipping. However, the 2008 first-rounder has youth, strong defense, and all the right physical tools on his side, so patience is warranted.
2009 The Marlins' 2008 first-round pick was the top high school catcher in the draft, but Skipworth struggled at the plate during his first taste of pro baseball. The Marlins were not deterred by his struggles; he's too young to worry about yet, especially with his plus-plus power potential and promising defense. It's tough to say just what kind of player he will be, but the potential to become an All-Star backstop is there.
