2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)With Houston DFA'ing Brett Wallace on Friday, do you think Jon Singleton has a shot to start the year in the big leagues?
(Justin from Chicago, IL)
No, I don't think so. He really struggled in the minors last year, and I don't think it's the message the Astros want to send. Smoke weed, get suspended, show up fat and struggle, have a good winter, make the major league roster. For an organization that is putting all its eggs in the basket of developing a young nucleus, that's not the message I'd want to send to the rest of talent. I'd make him wait and prove in Triple-A that he really wants to be a big league ballplayer. That may be the college coach in be talking, however. (Jeff Moore)
2013-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will the real Astros 1b of the future please stand up? Looking at you Chris Carter Brett Wallace and Jonathan singleton
(Tim from Walla walla)
Singleton will be the first baseman.

Wallace is on borrowed time. As much as I like the approach, he still has too many deficiencies. Carter is the DH now that they're allowed to have one. He should not be a fielder and absolutely should not be an outfielder. (Zachary Levine)
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)If Brett Wallace struggles next year (his K% makes one think he might) and Jonathan Singleton is tearing up AAA (off to a nice AFL start right now), how soon before we see him get the call?
(Ashitaka1110 from Houston, TX)
I know a guy in the Astros front office. I'll ask around.... (Jason Parks)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What in the world happened to Brett Wallace? This site and Baseball America hyped him up as a plus plus college bat before he was drafted.
(Gaby from Houston)
I think he was. He didn't make the secondary and tertiary adjustments that are necessary to find success at the major league level. They adjusted to him, and he was left twisting in the wind. If the bat speed can return to form, he can rebound. (Jason Parks)
2011-07-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does it seem stupid that the Astros are handpicking matchups for Brett Wallace rather than letting him develop on a terrible, terrible team? Stupid management.
(Smallville from Smallville)
It does seem stupid, but I do think what we are seeing is Wallace's true ability as a .280+ hitter without the power to profile for the position. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-05-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Injuries are plaguing my team at the moment. - Joe Mauer - Pablo Sandoval - Andrew Bailey - And now Ike Davis Which first baseman do you think will have the most value in the short term? - Brett Wallace (who I picked up and can quickly drop) - Mitch Moreland - Eric Hosmer
(HonusCobb from Hopedale, IL)
I'll jump on the Eric Hosmer bandwagon here. He's made a pretty smooth transition to the major leagues and is also showing power. I like Wallace a lot, too, but he plays on a bad team, which cuts down on his RBI opportunities. (John Perrotto)
2010-09-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)I'm a big Hunter Pence fan. His line has been extremely consistent these last 3 years and I was wondering if there's any chance a big breakout year is in his future. Or is he destined to hit 280 with 25 hrs and 80 rbi's every year?
(Brian Morgan from Chicago, ill.)
Pence has been consistent in the power and slugging department each of the last three seasons (SLG in the .460-.470 range) and his OBP seems secure in the .325-.330 range as I consider his 2009 walk rate to be more fluky than indicative. His RBI numbers may improve from a fantasy standpoint if players like Brett Wallace and Chris Johnson can be effective, but Pence sure seems like a lock for a .280/.330/.470 line with 25 HR, 80 RBI, and 15 SB. (Eric Seidman)
2010-08-02 13:30:00 (link to chat)The White Sox didn't get Adam Dunn, and I must admit that I'm a little verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic: The Disastros seemed to have actually helped themselves at this year's trade deadline. Discuss.
(Linda Richman from Coffee Talk)
I'm not buying it. At least they might have been able to sell a few tickets 2011 with the last big bits left from their mid-Aughties contenders. They're mid-pack at ~25,000 now, but who's going to buy a season ticket package to see a bad team whose highlights include hoping Brett Wallace can be the new Lyle Overbay? Their record might not be that much worse next year over this, but the deals didn't save Drayton McLane all that much money, the talent received isn't going to help them win, and the product went from bad and ex-famous to bad and boring. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-07-29 16:30:00 (link to chat)supposedly the Astros dealt Gose to the Jays for Brett Wallace...if so, it seems like the Astros got the best of that, no?
(uptick from st. louis)
Yeah, wow! A lot happening while I'm chatting here. I'd love to hear Kevin's take on this. I'm not sure what to say about it myself, because I'm afraid that I'm not valuing these guys correctly. (Matt Swartz)
2010-07-29 16:30:00 (link to chat)Astros flip Gose to Blue Jays for Brett Wallace. Does this signal that they are actively shopping Berkman much more than anyone thought?
(Lane from Austin)
They certainly should be shopping Berkman. He's not going to be part of the next contending Astros squad, and he has some value. I think it probably shows their awareness that they should. Certainly a good sign for Astros fans. (Matt Swartz)
2010-07-29 16:30:00 (link to chat)Looks like the Stros are trading Gose to the Jays for Brett Wallace, does that make it a better deal for them?
(RP from Smugpocalpyse)
Since I just answered a question about this when these both came in, but I love the Location of Smugpocalypse. (Matt Swartz)
2010-07-29 16:30:00 (link to chat)Gose flipped for Brett Wallace. Can he even play 1b?
(Silv from NY, NY)
Adam Dunn plays first base, and supposedly isn't even that bad at it right now. If anything, Brett Wallace seems very trade-able if the 1B experiment doesn't work. (Matt Swartz)
2010-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, I was a little surprised to find Brett Wallace absent from the midseason top 11. Are you concerned by the Vegas-inflated numbers? Or has he tailed off while I wasn't paying attention? Seems like we haven't heard much about him lately in the Future Shock updates. Thanks for all the good work, as usual.
(bctowns from Chicago, IL)
I'm just not that big a fan. He's a good average first baseman with a good-not-great walk rate and below average power for the position. I don't see an impact player there. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-06-07 18:30:00 (link to chat)How does Z Cox compare to Brett Wallace seeing who took him?
(ofMontreal from Ithaca )
Not completely dissimilar, at least Cox can play third base. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-04-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)with overbay, looking rather pitiful, will toronto be bringing wallace up, or are they so hung up on this clubhouse camaraderie they let one of the best hitting prospects waste away in the minors?
(mjk415 from elmhurst,il)
Overbay is the replacement level for first basemen, so even if he tells the absolute greatest jokes of all time in addition to providing psychological counseling to teammates as well as being the godfather to their children, there is no way Alex Anthopolous will hold back Brett Wallace for a guaranteed .265/.340/.445 with average defense. (Eric Seidman)
2010-03-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Brett Wallace: Offensive dynamo or younger, cheaper Lyle Overbay?
(Aaron from YYZ)
You stole my Brett Wallace comp! (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-03-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Most rankings seem to have Michael Taylor and Brett Wallace very close, whereas you have them 24 spots apart. What differences between them do you see that others are missing?
(mbring from St. Cloud, MN)
I haven't seen a lot of other rankings, I'm guess I have Wallace lower than most. He's a first baseman with on-base skills but not crazy power for the position, nor even the kind of power you need to star at the position. I just don't think he's a star there. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)How do you feel, given the succession of events, about trading CarGo, Street, and Smith for Michael Taylor?
(tommy from Fremont)
A lot better about it than I did trading CarGo and two years of Street for Brett Wallace. Either way, Greg Smith's what, a party favor? (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Brett Wallace is the next...?
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Better than Lyle Overbay, but not quite John Olerud. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of the middle of the Jays lineup with the addition of Brett Wallace? Lind/Snider/Wallace (in some order) Do you see as many RBIs as I anticipate?
(Stevealicious from Planet Lovetron)
RBI? Is this Omar Minaya asking me advice about his fantasy team?

Between the current presence of Lyle Overbay and the fact that Wallace could still use a bit of minor league seasoning, I'm skeptical that they'll start the year with such a lineup. I also think that if they put those three in a row, the number of GIDP will add up. We are talking about a guy whose nickname is the Walrus, after all.

OK, lightning round... (Jay Jaffe)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Liking the reported swap of Brett Wallace for Taylor
(DavidK44 from NYC)
Awaiting the outcome, but intrigued. On the other hand, I'd wonder if this wouldn't make Wallace the new CarGo or Carlos Pena, and a lock as a future star once he's in somebody else's organization. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, when do you think Chris Carter and Brett Wallace will hit the majors?
(jonwakelin from chicago)
At some point in 2010, but not Opening Day. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-11-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)3 questions you'll probably be able to answer in 6 words or less. What position does Chris Carter play in Oakland? What about Brett Wallace? And when does Grant Green reach Oakland?
(Nate from Sacramento)
First base; third base (for now); 2012, maybe end of 2011. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)With the benefit of hindsight, and the usual caveats that the post season is basically a crapshoot, how do you think the Cardinals' decision to trade half of their farm system for possible rentals worked out? Did they get enough value from Holliday and DeRosa (we will not speak of Khalil Greene...) to justify the depletion of the farm?
(Bill from New Mexico)
I think it's important not to overstate the penalty of what was a sensible aggressiveness in trying to win now. Chris Carpenter was healthy, after all, and how often does that happen? Then, to take the less-charitable view of what they dealt, what is it that they really gave up? If Brett Wallace winds up a first baseman, he was only a bargaining chip for them, and Mortensen and Peterson won't be franchise-breaking deletions from the nest. To get DeRosa, they gave up two live relief arms, yes, but relievers aren't exactly the most reliable commodities. I guess I'm just not quite sure why this is seen as a huge setback--there's a lot of doubt about Wallace's ability to play third, and the rest of the packages involved the kinds of guys good organizations have on hand to employ or trade, as needed. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Last one I'll submit today. Can Brett Wallace make an adequate 3B in the majors? Oakland has several potential 1Bs, in Barton, Everidge, Doolittle, and Carter. And their organizational depth is ridiculously shallow over on the left side of the infield.
(Kelvin from IN)
Well, I think the situation you describe is exactly why he'll get every opportunity to stay there. He's a very weird third baseman in that he's kind of the anti-Ryan Braun. Braun has all of the tools and athleticism to be and above-average 3B, but he's not, for whatever reason you want to throw out there. Wallace on the other hand makes the plays he gets to, has soft hands and a solid-but-unspectacular arm, but his range is just very very short. It's a different kind of measurement. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-08-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)With Colby Rasmus and Brett Wallace having moved on, does Shelby Miller go straight to the #1 spot in the Cardinals' system? If not, who does?
(Bill from New Mexico)
He certainly does in my book. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better as the top player in the two Holliday deals, Brett Wallace or Carlos Gonzalez?
(acmcdowell from Athens, GA)
In his Single-A stint in 2008 and Double-A stint this year, Wallace has looked like Joe Mauer at the plate, which is certainly solid, but I've heard enough questions about his defense that he seems to be 1B-bound at the MLB level. On that note, if he can sustain patience and develop power, he could be a very productive MLB player. CarGo has been traded about 12 times already and has put up virtually identical OBP/SLG lines in both of his MLB stints so far. I'm always more inclined to take the CF over the 1B, but in this case I'll break from that mold and say Wallace. (Eric Seidman)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)Brett Wallace = Nick Johnson?
(glenihan from nyc)
I don't think it's as linear as an apples-apples comparison but, that's my gist, that Wallace may be that sort of first baseman if he becomes a 1B at the MLB level. Not a TON of power like a traditional first baseman, but good on base numbers, and decent enough slugging to hold down fort. But power develops last for youngsters so he may well be on his way. (Eric Seidman)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Last time I asked about Adrian Cardenas and you weren't too high on him. Now you're skeptical about Chris Carter. Are there any position players in the A's minors you are excited about?
(Dave from Chicago)
From High-A and above, I'm hopeful about Brett Wallace, I like Jemile Weeks and Corey Brown, and I haven't given up on Cunningham or Buck. Josh Horton will be in the shortstop picture at some point, which is worth remembering. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's the difference between Brett Wallace and Daric Barton?
(Bill from New Mexico)
The base they're parked at next season. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-07-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do the Cardinals have what it takes to get Halladay? I've got to think Brett Wallace is expendable, but while guys like Jason Motte and Jess Todd are nice pieces, I get the feeling they don't have the kind of starting pitching required to get the deal done. Am I wrong about that?
(David Vines from NYC)
Tons of Halladay-trade scenarios in here.

Two Sundays ago I was on Ken Broo's fine sports show on WLW in Cincinnati -- Ken is a BP fan who knows his stuff -- and Halladay came up. I opined that the Cardinals were a possible destination for him, and that if that happened,it almost ensured the division. While teams like the Indians, Astros and Bruce-less Reds, are better served looking to the future, St. Louis may seriously want to consider such a deal. Wallace has a damn bright future, though. (David Laurila)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Odds on Brett Wallace sticking at 3B? Changed by the Futures game?
(BillJ from White Rock)
How can one game and one play change his odds? (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)OK, I get that one game "shouldn't" impact the evaluation of Brett Wallace's (or anyone else's) defense, even if it's the Futures game. So maybe my real question is: DOES the Futures game have that kind of effect? Are there scouts there who overvalue it?
(BillJ from White Rock)
None that I know of. It's a great opportunity to see a TON of guys in one day, but that's about it. Obviously see Matt Latos throw three times in real games this year is going to tell you far more than one inning on Sunday. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Have you seen Brett Wallace enough to have an opinion if he will or can stay at third base?
(jbuofm from peoria)
I haven't seen him enough, but scouts I talk to certainly have, and they tend to lean towards no. I still think you could see him come up there. He doesn't make embarrassing errors all day -- he actually has soft hands and a decent arm, it's just that he has the range of a lawn ornament. That's the thing that could help him. If he boots a ball, people go crazy; if a ball gets by him that any other third baseman would get to, people don't notice as much. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Give me the team and return for matt holliday by end of july? any brett wallace, yuni escobar type returns?
(pete from chicago)
I hope not Brett Wallace, he'd just add another body to the pile of first base-ish sort of hitter-y sorts of hitters who might be something, and more likely help Sacramento win another title than Oakland. I'd rather see what they might get flipping him for something with better upside from the Mets or Giants (hell, see if that gets you San Jose's territorial rights). (Christina Kahrl)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Kevin, can you give me a update on Brett Wallace? I know he is raking on offense but is his defense getting any better at 3b or are the cards going to have to move him? they really have no room in the of for him and that pujols guy is at first. thanks.
(Nick from Alton, IL)
Since when is .266 raking? Seriously, I have no issue with that bat, but the glove is the same -- makes the plays he gets too, just doesn't get to many of them. (Kevin Goldstein)
