2013 The Red Sox valued Stewart as part of their return on Kevin Youkilis so much that they dealt him to the Pirates in the offseason for Kyle Kaminska. Stewart is Triple-A filler but pitched like Double-A filler in the majors at the end of last season. His best-case scenario is becoming a middle-relief option, though the stuff has always been better than the results and that’s probably not changing any time soon.
2012 Stewart came to Chicago as part of the “Edwin Jackson Trade”—the one Sox fans preferred to label the “Colby Rasmus Trade” until they got a better look at Colby Rasmus—and put together a mixed run of starts for the big club down the stretch. A sinker/slider aficionado who can dial his fastball up to the mid-90s when necessary, Stewart induces his share of ground balls yet allowed a surprising number of gopher balls last year. His strikeout rate hasn’t matched his stuff, and the development of his dodgy changeup will help determine whether he’ll make his living at the back of the rotation or in the middle innings.
2011 Converted back to starting after spending much of his career as a reliever, Stewart experienced mixed success while reaching a career high in innings pitched. He mostly relies on a sinker/slider combo, which didn’t suffer much in the move back to starting. The limitation for Stewart is his ceiling, as he lacks the stuff of a front-line starter. He lost enough of his command in the conversion that it will take him at least another year in the minors before he is fully stretched out and ready for The Show.
2010 The better of the two righty relievers acquired in the Rolen trade, Zach Stewart was taken out of Texas Tech by the Reds in the third round of the 2008 draft. He started 2009 as a starter in High-A and remained in the role in Double-A, posting a combined 1.82 ERA with a 3.5 K/BB. He nonetheless returned to relief in Triple-A, dominating the International league despite a few too many walks and continuing to pitch well (with fewer walks, but also fewer Ks) in the Pacific Coast League after the trade. Just 23, he has above-average velocity and is a contender for the major-league pen this year.
2009 A third-round pick last June, Zach Stewart is one of those college closers who could move quickly through the system, but his big-league ceiling is probably no higher than set-up man.
