BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Jay Austin's 2010 could look like a successful one with enough squinting, but the wheels came off in 2011, as he was taking pitches he should have driven and swinging at pitches he could barely hit. Now a longshot to get back on the prospect track.
2011 Jay Austin has outstanding hand-eye coordination and bat speed but needs to reduce his strikeouts significantly to reach his high ceiling.
2010 A second-round pick in 2008, Austin is still very raw, but he's about as athletic as anyone in the Astros' system (for what that's worth). He's very fast and is solid defensively in center, which should give him a leg up on Houston's other outfielders if he can develop any kind of offensive game. His numbers should get a superficial boost if he ends up at Lancaster this year, but he's still a ways off.

2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)My Blaze open the season against Lancaster tonight. Who has a better chance to convert tools to success, me or Jay Austin?
(Engel Beltre from Bakersfield, CA)
Very different players. Beltre is fast, but not as fast as Austin, yet he eclipses Austin in every other tool. So much of Beltre's development at this point is just up to Beltre -- there are effort questions here. (Kevin Goldstein)
