2013 Diamond is the latest in a line of classically Twins-style pitchers: It doesn't seem like what they do should work at the big-league level, but it does, at least for a while. The problem is that the line includes such flashes in the pan as Joe Mays, Carlos Silva, and Blackburn; he who lives by the ball in play tends, eventually, to die by the ball in play. Diamond is not likely to maintain a 3.54 ERA, or belong at or near the top of any kind of respectable rotation. He did post a league-low walks per nine in 2012, though, and anyone who can do that and keep the ball in the park has value. Diamond's value is just likely to be much closer to the fourth-starter variety than the second starter he looked like in 2012.
2012 The Twins thought they'd found themselves a, um, Diamond in the rough when they plucked this Canadian southpaw from Braves in the 2010 Rule 5 draft. They shipped off 2009 second round pick Billy Bullock so they could stash their new treasure in the minors. Though he restored his strikeout rate, Diamond was doomed by a high BABIP in Triple-A. He nonetheless got a big league look, taking over Nick Blackburn's spot in the rotation in late August with shaky results. A pitch-to-contact groundballer, Diamond relies upon command of an 89 to 91-mph fastball, curveball and changeup, none of which are knockout pitches. When his command is off, it's "Goodnight Irene." Scouts feel he could wind up a LOOGY if nothing else, but that's not exactly aiming high.
2011 Scott Diamond is one of those upper-level strike throwers who isn't nearly as good as his stats might suggest, but he is durable and left-handed; said qualities got him a shot to make the Twins as a Rule 5 draft selection.

2014-04-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi RJ, curious if there is a recent precedent for what Collin McHugh is doing, and if so, how long was Quality Start performance sustained by the precedent? Andrew Albers comes to mind, but I think they're different pitchers.
(Drifter from Long Branch)
Albers is a good call as a pop-up type. Maybe Scott Diamond as well? Back in 2012 he had a pretty good ERA for a few months there. It's funny because McHugh's comment in the annual wasn't the least bit optimistic:

After another disastrous season—this one split between the Mets and Rockies, preceding an offseason waiver claim by the Astros—it's time to ask what McHugh really offers a major-league team. The only pitches he routinely throws for strikes—his fastball and slider—were hammered for slugging percentages over .550 (as was his sinker, at .952). His only asset appears to be his changeup, a groundball machine. But nothing about that arsenal suggests McHugh would succeed out of the bullpen, either—his fastball is just too hittable, and none of his breaking pitches have shown swing-and-miss movement. On second thought, maybe it's not time to ask the question, but rather to answer it.

Obviously pitchers can change, and maybe he's found something that works for him. My guess is he'll fade and we'll look back in a year at McHugh like we're doing right now with Albers and Diamond. There is something interesting about his profile: he's become less of a groundball pitcher thus far; not just in his two big-league appearances, but also in his 14 minor-league innings, too. I guess I should make an appointment to see his next start. (R.J. Anderson)
2012-09-24 14:30:00 (link to chat)How much regression should we expect from Scott Diamond in 2013?
(Bradley Ankrom from New York)
Some, certainly. But some of it's already happening. With a decent defense behind him, I think he could put up ERAs in the very low 4s. Solid #3 or 4 pitcher on most teams, ace for the Twins. (Bill Parker)
2012-08-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Scott Diamond's unexpectedly good year? Can the Twins count on anything close to this year's numbers in next year's rotation?
(ErikJH from Washington DC)
Short answer is no, I don't think they can expect anything close to a repeat performance from Diamond next year. Not walking guys is great, but you have to miss some bats to have sustainable success (with very rare exceptions). (Bradley Ankrom)
