2012 All hail the terrible beast Lasvegas, to whom we feed all our quadrupliest-A pitchers! Feast on Scott Richmond, Lasvegas, and be nourished!
2011 Richmond spent most of 2010 snake-bitten by a variety of shoulder injuries. When he did pitch, he was mostly up to his old tricks: he showed decent command and the rest was finesse. His reliance on a fastball/slider complement, combined with the fact that he doesnít throw very hard, means that Richmond may be extra vulnerable against lefties.
2010 This British Columbia native was an independent-league find in 2008 and a regular part of the Jaysí rotation in 2009, though itís unclear if that is more a credit to Richmond or an embarrassment to the Jays. Richmond had solid peripherals in 2009, but was beaten about the head and neck by lefties (.292/.377/.550, 17 homers in 378 plate appearances) and had an acute case of gopheritis (1.8 HR/9), the latter the result of an extreme fly-ball rate and a lot of hard contact. Things only got worse as the season went along: in his final eight starts, Richmond allowed 11 homers, struck out just five more men than he walked, posted a 9.40 ERA, and averaged less than 4 2/3 innings per start. If heís still a major-league starter two years from now, weíll be shocked.
2009 Richmondís journey to the majors is far more interesting than his pitching. Born in Vancouver, a citizen of New Zealand via his father, and a graduate of Oklahoma State, the finesse righty was undrafted out of college and spent three years playing for Edmonton in the independent Northern League before being signed by the Jays. Richmond pitched poorly for Canada in the inaugural World Baseball Classic, but helped his homeland earn a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics; ironically, he got called up to the majors just in time to miss the actual Olympic tournament. His first four major league starts were nearly identical (five-odd innings, three runs), and the fifth was a rain-shortened six-inning shutout of the Orioles. In the majors and at Syracuse, he had pretty dramatic platoon splits, struggling to get lefties and shutting down righties; they're small samples, but something to keep an eye on.
