2013 After emerging as a passable replacement during the 2011 season, Petersen earned a second look in 2012. Unfortunately, his bid for an encore quickly turned into a flop, with the new ballpark sapping his already mediocre pop and exposing his fringy range in center field. Petersen is a tweener, even by reserve standards, with a fifth-outfielder bat and insufficient versatility to compensate. He’ll face long odds to make the major-league roster out of spring training, and a return trip to New Orleans is the most likely outcome.
2012 Petersen received a quarter-season of regular at-bats in center field when injuries put Chris Coghlan and Scott Cousins on the disabled list in June. Playing every day exposed Petersen's lack of range in center, but his below-average bat isn't going to displace Mike Stanton or Logan Morrison in either of the corners any time soon. He's likely a fourth or fifth outfielder on a first-division roster, and he'll face stiff competition for playing time in 2012.
2011 An upper-round product of UC Irvine's reborn baseball program and a veteran of the '07 team that nearly achieved an upset win in the College World Series, Petersen's absence of outright failure as a pro so far has kept his name on some prospect lists. He's only really hit in two places, though: his intro to full-season ball in Low-A (lower than a Big West star should have been), and the Arizona Fall League, where even the zombies swing live bats. Petersen is an athletic, scrappy tweener with a swing hole-y enough that not even a platoon of Dutch boys might plug it up, leaving you with a guy worth mentioning mostly because the Marlins are cheap and don't have an automatic answer for who next year's center fielder might be.
2010 A 2007 fourth-rounder, Petersen has evolved dramatically in his short minor-league career. In his first season and a half of play, comprising his stints at Jamestown and Greensboro, he struck out 127 times in 585 PAs (roughly 22 percent) while hitting 24 home runs. Then, almost as if he met Joe Sewell on the road to Jupiter, he greatly curtailed the Ks—in 713 PAs since reaching High-A, Petersen has whiffed just 101 times (14 percent). The trade-off for this improved contact-hitting was that the home runs went away as well, with Petersen hitting just 11 since his transformation. Fortunately, he can play center field, so offensive expectations are less than if he were restricted to a corner. Petersen ransacked the Arizona Fall League with a circuit-leading .422 average, something that should raise his profile quite a bit.
