BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2013 Former fourth pick Daniel Moskos was designated for assignment by the Pirates and outrighted to Triple-A by the White Sox. Even the good side of his reverse platoon split, right-handed batters, only makes him good enough to be a “fourth lefty,” a role that doesn't exist.
2012 Known in Pittsburgh as “Not Matt Wieters,” who was taken with the next pick in the 2007 draft, Moskos is not going to fulfill the old regime’s hope that he would become a fierce end-game reliever. With a low-to-mid-90s fastball and wipeout slider, Moskos is more likely to develop into a lefty specialist, despite reverse splits during his time in the majors last season. Should Moskos become a useful reliever, Pirates fans will have to curb their truculence by gracing him with a different nickname. Perhaps, Daily ‘Kos?
2011 The most controversial move former Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield made during his ill-starred six years on the job from 2001-07 was select Moskos over Matt Wieters with the fourth overall pick in the '07 draft. Littlefield insisted that his scouts believed Moskos that could become a shut-down late-game reliever. Moskos entered the year with a shiny new "bust" tag all but within reach, but he saved his prospect status and maybe his career by moving back to the bullpen. He dominated Double-A with a 95-mph fastball and a wipeout slider, but had trouble throwing strikes when promoted to Triple-A, admitting that he had put too much pressure on himself. Despite this, he and could find his way to the majors this year, and while he's not an impact arm, nobody is throwing the word bust around anymore either.
2010 Moskos will forever be known in Pittsburgh as the man who was selected one pick ahead of Matt Wieters in the 2007 draft. The selection created such a fan backlash that many observers believe that it was this that pushed ownership to finally fire general manager Dave Littlefield. It's small consolation that Moskos finally had a decent year at Altoona last season, but his strikeout rate, despite second-hand improvement, was alarmingly low for a purported power pitcher; the Pirates openly admit that his fastball and slider are nowhere near as good as when he was a college standout at Clemson. Moskos's best bet to pitch in the major leagues may be as a situational lefty.
2009 Daniel Moskos will be infamous in the organization for being picked directly ahead of Matt Wieters in 2007, but that might be better than being remembered for how he's pitched since.
2008 Never has a first-round draft pick caused Pirates fans more consternation than the selection of Moskos out of Clemson with the fourth overall pick last year. Most fans wanted the Pirates to choose highly-touted Georgia Tech catcher Josh Wieters, whom the Orioles took with the next pick, instead of Moskos. Moskos's excellent slider makes him a candidate to be a fine set-up man, but his willingness to accept slot money seemed to be what made him most attractive to the Pirates.

(lpiklor from Chicago)
Nothing good. Scouts say he's pretty much nothing like the pitcher he was at college. It's a bit of a mystery but he's been awful. Speaking of awful 2007 first-round pitchers -- reviews of Pittsburgh's Daniel Moskos have been downright embarassing. (Kevin Goldstein)
