YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Pacheco is a contact hitter who has a short stroke and marginal secondary skills, which means that he must maintain a high batting average to have value. He caught a lot in the minors but as a rookie mainly played the corner infield spots, where his lack of power is more of an issue. His defense at third caused the Rockies to send him back to Triple-A eight games into the season for a three-week “tuneup.” It improved as the season progressed and he became less tentative with experience. Pacheco hits lefties well and could be useful in a platoon role, particularly if he moves back behind the plate.
2012 Most of Pacheco's professional experience has come behind the plate, although he saw more action at first and third base after being recalled in September. Pacheco owns a .303 batting average in nearly 2000 minor-league plate appearances, but he has substandard power. His ISO at Triple-A last year was .099, an extraordinary accomplishment at Colorado Springs. (The Sky Sox as a team had a .184 ISO.) As Fred Ebb never wrote, if you can't hit there, you can't hit anywhere.
2011 Drafted as an infielder out of the University of New Mexico in 2007, Pacheco was moved behind the plate in 2008 at age 22. Though he has caught exclusively since, he is still learning his position. Fortunately, he has the hitting thing down. Pacecho has batted .322 with doubles power over the past two seasons and walked more than he struck out in two of his last three minor-league seasons. If he can master a certain level of competence behind the dish, he’ll be a valuable offense-first catcher.

2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Arenado went from a top prospect down to not even ranked by some basically because of attitude. What are your thoughts?
(Dave from Chicago)
I don't know about his attitude, but I do know that his numbers dipped last year when he moved up to Double-A, which was probably particularly disappointing since the Texas League is a great offensive environment. But, similar to Myers, I think Arenado's bat will define his timetable... if he crushes Triple-A for 4-5 weeks to start the season, the Rockies should not and likely will not let Chris Nelson, Jordan Pacheco and company block his way. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)10 team keeper 4x4 NL-only league - what's the definition of a "worth hanging on to at $10" player? Who's the example?
(Ratcatcher from R'lyeh)
Jordan Pacheco, has some good positional eligibility and does enough to be worth it. Not great, little upside. (Paul Sporer)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)At what point will I be replaced this season?
(Casey Blake from Rocker)
If Nolan Arenado hits in the minors, it may be no later than the All-Star break. If Blake doesn't hit, it may be no later than April 30. The team doesn't have any high quality options, but they could easily try someone like Chris Nelson or Jordan Pacheco if Blake is struggling. (Derek Carty)
