2016 Gomes is known in some circles as "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," because fans get disgusted and change the channel when comes in. Despite clearing waivers last winter, he was somehow pegged for high-leverage duty once the season started despite no increase in skill or ability. Such were the Rays. He does not possess ideal size for a pitcher. His fastball is ordinary and he lacks a plus secondary offering. Yes, he can throw strikes; however, he lacks the command to stay away from nitro zones. When hungry power hitters come to the plate, Gomes can take them right to flavor town, 90 mph at a time.
2015 Brandon Gomes has spent the last four years as a split resident of Durham and St. Petersburg, but that's about to come to an end: he has neither options nor a pitch to get lefties out.
2014 Another dreadful season against lefties recommends Gomes for strict platoon usage going forward. In 2013, he faced 38 percent lefties, and they torched him for an 1.137 OPS after a 1.047 in approximately the same usage in 2012. In other words, Gomes' splitter has never quite come around and his fastball (often slowed by injuries) isn't zippy enough to get by swinging bats. Gomes missed time early in 2012 recovering from back surgery, and lost more than half of 2013 to a latissimus dorsi strain. His rather violent sidearm delivery has ball-hiding advantages, but for now he's a guy to put on the Triple-A taxi squad and use sparingly.
2013 Delete his four-run, 1/3-inning appearance at Kansas City in June, and Gomes's ERA was 3.12 instead of 5.09. That may be a generous way of saying that relief stats are volatile and don't always tell the whole story, which in Gomes's case is mostly about other pitchers. Tampa Bay's long-haul starters required less mid-inning relief than others. When they did, there were other guys, like Burke Badenhop, holding those innings down. Most bullpens have a sub-replacement mop-up guy (see Sonnanstine, Andy), but there simply wasn't room on Tampa Bay's formidable firefighting force for Gomes's erratic work. He did, after all, have that four-run inning at Kansas City.
2012 He was one of the quartet the Rays received in the Jason Bartlett deal and was easily the most productive of the four. Gomes worked in 40 games for the Rays and another 20 in Triple-A throughout the season. In Durham, he struck out 25 of the 56 right-handed batters he faced while allowing just 12 to reach base. At the big league lever, he had a .217/.298/.277 slash line against righties in 95 plate appearances. He is mainly a fastball/splitter pitcher, and an elongated effort with his arm gives opposite-handed batters a good look at the ball, leaving him susceptible to left-handed bats. Maddon used him rather effectively in the second half of 2011 in the role Dan Wheeler had been used in during previous seasons.
2011 Brandon Gomes has an impressive track record that has been built almost entirely with his curveball, but there are questions about how successful he can be at the higher levels. It's hard to argue with his K/BB ratios or low, low ERA, but those numbers suggest more dominance than the 26-year-old Double-A reliever can actually offer. The Rays will find out whether he's any good, as the potential sleeper is now their property.
