BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 People think about power fastballs and the intimidation factor when they think about 6-foot-7 relievers named Duke. Welker does not disappoint. His fastball features plus-plus velocity and he shows the ability to locate it down in the zone. He will struggle with control occasionally, and this brings up the intimidating part of his game. He has hit a batter once every 15 innings throughout his minor-league career, the same rate as the 2012 big-league leader in hit batsmen, Ian Kennedy. Expect Welker to bring strikeouts, walks, groundballs, and bruises to the Steel City sometime soon.
2008 The Pirates' second-round draft pick last year out of Arkansas, Duke Welker pitched well in his pro debut and projects as a potential third starter.
