2016-03-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your take on Hector Olivera? Will he be the power bat that he was projected to be? What is the word on him so far in camp? Thanks.
(Chris from SF)
I'm not at all convinced that Olivera was ever projected to be a power bat, but after hitting four homers across all levels last year ... no. My long take is that left field is kind of a garbage dump, where you need to hit, and hit well, in order to really become a difference maker (some exceptions allowed). As a left fielder, Olivera's bat-to-ball and potential defense hardly thrill me. PECOTA sees a maybe one-win player, and that sounds about right: slightly below average. He's had some hits so far this Spring, but those stats aren't useful for nearly anything. We'll see. (Bryan Grosnick)
2016-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Eugenio Suarez? Picked him up in a recent trade (for J Turner) because I liked what he did last year and it looks like he'll play every day either at 3rd or short. Thought he might profile as a possible 20 HR SS in that park but it looks like he has a pretty clear path to the 3rd base gig. Also would like your thoughts on Hector Olivera and his potential ceiling with the Braves. Thx.
(misterbob from pa)
Yeah, you're right on it re: Suarez. Really dig the eligibility, and he's got some pop that should help him return decent value. Olivera I have as little read on as any player in the majors. Didn't like what I saw out of him last year, too much uncertainty for me to draft with any confidence. Between the two I'd go Suarez comfortably. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Can Hector Olivera be a .280 20 HR hitter this year? He had a rough 2015, hadn't played in 2 years, adjustment from Cuba, raked initially for AAA/AA Dodgers, but then got hurt and completely fell off the map after being traded to Atlanta. Who is this guy?
(holmesp2001 from St Louis)
Good question. I have no idea anymore and I'm dying to find out. I'd be worried about the average, but I think 15-20 HR in a full season isn't out of the question. (George Bissell)
2016-01-14 20:00:00 (link to chat)Pick two players for the next three seasons: Hector Olivera, Kyle Seager, Jose Peraza, Steven Souza, Matt Duffy. It's a rebuilding season...
(Ron from Texarkana)
Seager and Souza. Duffy is steadier/less risky than Souza so if you don't want/need as much ceiling he's the better call. (Mike Gianella)
2015-09-30 19:00:00 (link to chat)Mauricio---Interested in your take on a few young guys I currently have on my fantasy roster-----Josh Bell, Dave Dahl and Hector Olivera. How would you rank them as far as their futures and their ceilings ----realizing that Olivera hasnt yet given you much of an opportunity to evaluate him. So far though I do see a lot of swing and miss in the few times I've seen him with the Braves, especially vs the off speed stuff. Thanks
(misterbob from brookhaven pa)
Dahl then Bell then Olivera with the last two being close in value. I know Dahl had a rough season but he still has serious potential and upside. (Mauricio Rubio)
2015-07-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the love. Who do you like more ROS- me or Justin Turner?
(Jung-Ho Kang from Spurgh)
Whats up JHK? I have to give it to Justin Turner, he's had an incredible year, but I'm going to be #bold here...If Hector Olivera and Corey Seager are going to come up, Turner is going to lose AB's especially against lefties (who he's hitting .122 against this year). Kang has everyday AB's locked up for the next two months with Harrison out, I think he's going to have a MONSTER second half. (George Bissell)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Hector Olivera the next great Cuban? What kind of slash line could he put up over the course of a season?
(Larry from Catskills)
Great is too strong. There's an awful lot to like, his barrel skills are really impressive and there's some sneaky power, but I don't see a ton of upside here. A 270/300/420 hitter is what I'd expect in his best years. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-03-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)*IF* Hector Olivera has a balky UCL does anyone sign him? Not just this year, but ever. Given previous health, age questions, and at least 12-months rehab we are looking at a 31yo (at a min) MI when the age gremlins tend to sap MI goodness in the age 32/33 seasons.
(king kang from KBO)
I still think someone gives him a chance. He's a potential first-division regular, and assuming he doesn't ask for the moon -- and there's no reason for anyone to give him the moon or for him to ask -- he'll sign at some point. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-01-15 18:00:00 (link to chat)Toronto has a little bit of money left but has a couple of potential needs (Closer, 2B, CF, SP). If you were the team's GM which would you prioritize knowing that the likely fallback options for those positions were Dalton Pompey (CF), Brett Cecil (CL), and Devon Travis (2b). Axford or K-Rod for closer and Hector Olivera at second base would look nice no?
(Jim from Ottawa)
I'm not a believer in Devon Travis as a significant MLB contributor, so I would focus my attention on finding alternatives or ideally an answer at second base. If not that, then I think it makes more sense to focus on finding additional arms for the rotation at this point. (Mark Anderson)
