YearComment
2008 David Pinto's work on pitchers' fielding support suggestions that Bacsik received much more help from the other eight guys on the diamond last year than most moundsmen; among the others at the top of the list were Chien-Ming Wang, Jeremy Guthrie, and Brian Bannister, and those last two are certainly pitchers who will be entering 2008 with a lot of question marks. The Nats understood what they got out of the soft-tossing southpaw as one of their coalition of the willing used to people the pitching staff, thanked him for his time, and only re-signed him to a minor league deal with an invitation to camp. If he shows up in a ballpark near you, you'll either see some great defense or a journeyman getting tattooed more regularly than the cast of Miami Ink.
2005 Swingman/non-prospect who fits the mold of the Ranger pitcher perfectly. Did manage to keep his ERA under 5, primarily by throwing seven shutout innings against the powerful Detroit offense. Considering that was half of his major league workload, that should tell you something about how the rest of the year went. Bacsik doesn't strike people out, and he had no long-term performance record that indicates he's likely to be effective going forward.
2003 A throw-in from the Tribe in the Alomar deal, Bacsik is one of those guys who people really want to see succeed, but you have to wonder if itís just going to be Dave Fleming redux, without the highlights. Heís never going to overawe anyone, having already been condemned to the finesse lefty toolkit, but with Rey Sanchez at short behind him, he might end up looking pretty sweet in short doses. Heíll compete for the last slot in the rotation.
2002 Bacsik is a command left-hander dealt to the Mets as part of the Roberto Alomar deal. He's not ready for the majors yet, which is good, because the Mets need another command lefty in the rotation like they need to hear another plane take off. As pitchers in this class go, Bacsik is a good one. He just needs to end up in front of a good defense to be successful.
2001 Mike Bacsik is a left-handed control artist with your standard fastball/curve/change-up assortment. He bounced back to A ball to recover from a miserable í99, then moved up on merit almost as much as he was sucked upwards by the vortex of arm death that beset the organization. The higher he went, the more often hitters hammered his mistakes, so he shouldnít be ready for this yearís rotation shuffle.
2000 The Indiansí minor league pitcher of the year in 1998, Bacsik isnít really a prospect yet. He spots his slow fastball well and mixes in a good changeup. He does not have a consistent breaking pitch, but his curve has promise. The key is that heís young for someone already pitching at Double-A. Because of that, if he fills out and picks up some velocity, he could turn into something.
