BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2008 Preston Wilson was killing the Cardinals when he hit the DL with a knee injury in May. He never returned, undergoing microfracture surgery in June that ended his season. Wilson hasn't been a good player since 2003 and will have a hard time even finding an invite to spring training.
2007 Wilson`s been reduced to replacement level against right-handers in recent years, and his defense long ago ceased to be adequate for center, if it ever was. He still handles lefties well enough, but teams are going to have to start looking at him as something less than a full-time player if they want to get value out of him. Unfortunately, a player with as undisciplined a swing as Wilson`s isn`t a natural fit for bench work; managers like to see their reserve hitters make a bit of contact. A free-agent this winter, Wilson didn`t have a job at press time.
2006 Statistical Luddites will no doubt gnash their teeth over those stupid numbers and how they must not mean anything, but what did you expect after hauling the guy down from Denver? The guy who put on the fireworks show in 2003? The statistics didn`t lie, but apparently some never grasp the subtleties of the game`s lingua franca. Credit Wilson`s agent for being smart and placing his client back into another bandbox. In Houston, he will regain his park-generated reputation as a mid-lineup bopper and benefit from playing an outfield corner.
2005 A nagging knee injury cost him most of the season, depressing endless roto owners, who have an inflated idea of Wilson's real value because of his combination of speed and power and his home park. When it comes to real baseball, Wilson's dramatically overrated: He's fast, but doesn't steal bases efficiently, doesn't hit particularly well for average or draw walks, and plays visible but ineffective defense, a la Ken Griffey Jr. early in his career. The Rockies are trying to move him, but his injury and prohibitive salary have thwarted all attempts to date.
2003 Wilsonís super-sized contractó$27.5 million over the next three yearsómade him a Rockie, but heís a valuable player who has a great chance to put up superstar numbers in Colorado. Wrist, hammy, knee, and toe injuries did a number on his season with the Marlins; he got plenty of playing time, but generally wasnít at full speed. Heíll be healthy for spring training and man center for the Rox in 2003. As weíve noted in the past, Coors doesnít just inflate power stats, it deflates strikeouts, which will mean more at-bats for Wilson with balls in play, rattling around in the gaps, and probably pushing him into an All-Star game or two.
2002 Wilson had a horrible year, as he and his wife Trista lost a newborn child in July, for which we offer them our deepest condolences. On the field, Wilson had perhaps his best season, making much more contact and increasing all his numbers accordingly. His five-year, $45-million contract still looks excessive, but perhaps less so than it did a year ago.
2001 Preston Wilson put up some big counting numbers last year: 187 strikeouts, 31 home runs, 36 stolen bases, and 121 RBI. Frankly, too much attention was paid to all of them. More significant are his rate stats, which show him to be a scarcely above-average center fielder. This really isnít a bad thing, since a quality team doesnít need stars at every position. It becomes problematic only after this season, when Wilson is eligible for salary arbitration and the Marlins may be tempted to sign him to a long-term contract. They need to recognize what they have and decide if they want to overpay for it.
2000 To his credit, he got a chance and took advantage, putting together his best season as a professional. Realistically, this is the top of his range; he didnít fundamentally change as a player, he just did the things he does pretty well. He hit .414 when not striking out, which wonít last. Even when he returns to Earth, Wilson would make a good platoon right fielder, as he hits left-handers and is a good glove man on the outfield corners. The Marlins need to not get discouraged with him this year when he slips and focus on what he can do to contribute.
1999 Although heís not nearly as good as heís made out to be, he is turning out better than most of us statheads thought he would. Still terrible when it comes to waiting for his pitch, and easily embarassed by a good pitcher. Heís a good fielder and he can run, but right now, heís a significantly worse prospect than Kotsay, and not that really close to Dunwoody either.
1998 Donít believe the hype. No prospect. Wilson has no plate discipline to speak of, and major league pitchers turn guys like this into roadkill. Heíll get a couple of cups of coffee, but unless he learns to lay off sliders down and away, heís never going to help a team.
1997 Mookieís stepson, and the Metsí first pick in 1992, has been one of the biggest first-round disasters in recent memory. A tremendous athlete, heís struck out 270 times with just 47 walks in the last three years; really just a little over two years, since this year was washed out by wrist and shoulder injuries. Itís no real loss to the Mets; this guy, rated a Top 10 Prospect by Baseball America for three years in a row, isnít enough of a hitter.

(Rob from Alaska)
