DateQuestionAnswer
2011-05-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances A. Oliver sticks in the DET rotation?
(paulbellows from Calgary)
Slim this time, unless the Tigers are willing to move Brad Penny into the bullpen or onto another team. (R.J. Anderson)
2010-11-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)How does Brad Penny suit you and what do you think he fetches in this mkt?
(Matt from Chicago)
He's not really my type, but in this market, Brad Penny fetches Karina Smirnoff, to judge by their recent engagement. And that was before he started getting into the best shape of his life. (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-11-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm hearing Brad Penny is getting in great shape. Is he worth a shot on a 1yr incentive-laden deal?
(Matt from Chicago)
If your team doctors think they can keep him healthy, absolutely. One year deals work out well frequently enough, and they don't cripple your team's finances going forward. He definitely showed excellent control early this year while he was playing. (Matt Swartz)
2010-10-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will the Pirates go after a Lance Bergman or Jorge Cantu type at 1B, hoping for a rebound season? And same for SP's (say maybe a Javy Vasquez, Millwood , Chris Young, etc)?
(sweet lou from Pitt)
Their priority is starting pitching and I can see them going after a couple of free agents who are coming off tough or injury-plauged seasons who would be looking more for a chance to pitch every five days than being on a contender. The three you mention fit that description and I wouldn't discount someone like Brad Penny or Erik Bedard, too. (John Perrotto)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a shallow 8 team league with some friends. I drafter Chipper, but grabbed Headley on the waiver wire. Do I drop Chipper and grab a pitcher? Jaime Garcia, Brad Penny, Phil Hughes, Brett Cecil, and Wade Davis are all available. Bonus round: I already snagged CJ Wilson off the wire. Do you like any of the guys I listed better than CJ? Thanks!
(Gregjitsu from Cal)
I like C.J. Wilson a lot. I think he's like Buehrle with more strikeouts (more walks too, though). I wonder why he started out as a reliever, because he's got the stuff and repertoire to be a starter.

Hughes, Cecil or Davis would all be worthwhile IMO. Cecil will probably give you the fewest wins though, when the Jays remember they are the Jays. (Marc Normandin)
2010-04-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)How long before Brad Penny turns into a pumpkin?
(Bill from New Mexico)
I'm very bullish on Penny and have been for the last couple of years. Especially now that he's with Dave Duncan there is no reason to expect him to implode. It's easy to forget how good he was only three years ago, and from 2001-07 for that matter. I'll gladly take my chances on a guy who throws 95 and is now dedicating himself to inducing grounders. (Eric Seidman)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Cardinals pitching prospect Jaime Garcia has looked downright evil this spring, but doesn't seem to be in serious consideration for the rotation, which definitely has a vacancy. What's going on, Christina? Flash-in-the-pan syndrome? Justifiable desire to hold the workload down for a TJ survivor? Or a noxious manifestation of Dave Duncan's aversion to working with young pitchers, particularly starters?
(Bill from New Mexico)
Hi Bill, always a pleasure to see you on the boards... I think it's very much a matter of politburo-style turnitis, in that it isn't his turn yet. He's having a great camp, he's coming back from injury, and especially because of April scheduling, I could see him spending the first month or two getting regular starts for Memphis. By June, we'll know if McClellan's calling for reinforcements (inevitable, if you ask any Civil War buff), or if Rich Hill's redeemable and that's just in the fifth spot. Duncan's deserved reputation or no, I'm just not that wild on bets that Kyle Lohse and Brad Penny will be totally fine, so I think Garcia's going to be put to work at some point this season. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Cardinals signed Rich Hill--any chance Dave Duncan can get his career off life support?
(dwiest12 from NoVA)
If anyone can and if his arm is sound, it's Duncan, and it isn't like Hill's that far removed from being a very good big-league pitcher. That said, questions about his arm and his head will have to be answered. I may have seemed overly flip in suggesting that he could be the Cards' third-best starter this year, but it was something of a poorly-put left-handed compliment, because Lohse has to come back and I'm not really wild about Brad Penny. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should the Tigers sign Brad Penny, or can they put some faith in Nate Robertson/Armando Galaraga not sucking down the stretch?
(David from Winston Salem)
I'd just as soon stick with Robertston/Galarraga. (John Perrotto)
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat)With Smoltz and Buchholz close to being available, who do the Red Sox take out of the rotation? Is a Wakefield phantom DL imminent?
(David from Boston)
This is an example of a good problem to have and why it pays off to not just have depth at a position, but a slew of solid contributors who could benefit plenty of other teams. Wakefield shouldn't have to go to the DL to make room for either Smoltz or Buchholz. Teams are going to be calling about Brad Penny and the Sox should be able to get something tangible in return. Smoltz has a questionable history of health and so any contributions from him should be considered a bonus. The great thing about Wake is that you can relegate him to the bullpen and not risk him really hurting himself with the different methods of warming up. So, perhaps they can unload Penny and push Wakefield to the bullpen until someone gets hurt. Or, let Buchholz start from the pen and work his way into the majors. AAA isn't MLB. (Eric Seidman)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Joe, thanks for the chat. Fantasy baseball question: I can pick up John Smoltz, but doing so would put me just a few dollars below our league salary cap, limiting moves I can make later on in the season unless I make trades to move salary. Do you think Smoltz will be coming back and putting up decent numbers in the second half the season? Or is picking him up just too risky?
(Dennis from Monterey Park, CA)
I think it's risky just because of the Sox' pitching depth. I expect Smoltz to be effective when healthy, but at some point they have to call up Buchholz, right? And even Brad Penny has started pitching well. It might be tough for Smoltz to carve out a role. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina, thanks for reading my question. Do you think the Red Sox erred by signing Brad Penny? I'm of the belief that Clay Buchholz is ready now, and with John Smoltz (supposedly) on the way, I'm not seeing a way short of a ton of injuries that Buchholz makes it up to Boston this year. Oh, and great idea for BP Idol.
(mattymatty from Philly)
No problem matty, thanks for taking the time to drop by and ask it. ;)

I think Penny was probably the pitcher too far, but to some extent it's defensible. They didn't make a major commitment, it's not a mistake the way "winning" on Burnett was for the Yankees, they still control Buchholz, and in the AL East arms race, keeping up with the Joneses is a natural enough impulse. I think the Sox are fine; as I noted in TA, that pen's ridiculously stacked.

As for Idol, I had nothing to do with the concept, I just get to tell people they look great up there for coming up with it. As is, it's wonderful to see how much enthusiasm there is for the idea, and my hope is that we do find the next Keith Law or Keith Woolner or Dan Fox, the new James Click or Caleb Peiffer. 2009-04-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)How many starts will we have to endure with Brad Penny until the Sox realize Buchholz was the answer all along? I say 3.
(Gavin from County Ct.)
More than that, but the next time Buchholz leaves the minors will be the last. He may be the Red Sox' second-best starting pitcher by October. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you're the Cardinals, what moves would you make for the rotation, second and SS? Randy Johnson a 1 year deal? Brad Penny? Orlando Hudson? With the Brewers losing their big starters, I think the Cardinals could win the wildcard if they make a couple of good moves...
(MikeJordan23 from Brooklyn)
They definitely need pitching, and renting Randy might pay off. He had a good year in the end. Penny scares me, and I've written a bunch of times about the team that signs Hudson is paying for good defense and a park effect (which is not to say that the Cards don't need help there). I just wonder how much they can count on the offense next year. Pujols should be Pujols and we should probably expect consistency from Glaus, but the whole OF is a question mark, esp. if they decide to sell high on Ludwick. Can they do better at shortstop? Can Ankiel stay healthy? It's possible they patch the pitching and they stop scoring... (Steven Goldman)
