BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 The first-overall pick in the Rule 5 draft, Josh Rodriguez failed to impress during a seven-game audition and was sent back to Cleveland in late April. Pittsburgh reacquired him in June for minor league purposes.
2011 A second-round pick in 2006, Rodriguez has had an up-and-down career in terms of both performance and health, but his 2010 campaign represented a career year. Drafted as a shortstop, Rodriguez spent time at six positions. His bat may play best at short, but his holding a job there will take some unlikely defensive improvement, as he's not athletically gifted enough to play the position regularly. Rodriguez was not protected from the Rule 5 draft, and the Pirates took advantage, making him the first overall pick. He will have a good chance of sticking on the bench given the team's lack of second-line players.
2010 Middle infielder Josh Rodriguez lost most of the season due to a hamstring injury. Hes shown great plate discipline (12.1% walk rate), but his age is an issue, his defense on the left side falls a bit short, and this will be the year he needs to make the jump.
2009 Josh Rodriguez flopped in his first introduction to Double-A after going 20-20 on the Carolina League in '07, dampening enthusiasm about his potential to be a starting second baseman.
2008 A second-round pick out of Rice in 2006, Rodriguez's numbers in his full-season debut last year might not impress when taken as a whole, but he came on strong late in the season, hitting .287/.372/.513 after the All-Star break, including 10 home runs in August alone. The bad news is that he's not really a shortstop. The good news is that some think he has Jeff Kent-level potential as a second baseman. We'll see if the Indians are smart enough to hold on to Kent II, having yielded the original for one year of Matt Williams back in the last century.

DateQuestionAnswer
2012-02-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)Backups don't seem to get any love. Who are the best OF and IF backups in MLB? I'm like TEX's David Murphy for the OF, and NYY's E. Nunez for the IF. Thanks.
(Kristen W. from Canada)
I keep waiting for the Reds to give Chris Heisey the everyday LF job and just leave him alone. He's a mini Mike Morse type in my mind; I hope he gets 500 AB's this year although we'll see what effect the signing of Ryan Ludwick has on his PT. As for infielders, I like Nunez (see comments earlier in this chat), but many IF's are glove-first guys so it's harder to get excited about the backups. Heck, I was into Brad Emaus and Josh Rodriguez last year, and that didn't turn out very well! (Cory Schwartz)
