2013 Garcia missed two months with a sore shoulder but returned in the late going, helping pitch the Cardinals into the postseason with a 2.50 ERA and four wins in September. During his last start the young lefty again felt pain but kept it a secret, tried to gut out his NLDS start, but could only make it through two innings before being shut down. Critics assailed him for foolishly putting his team at risk, though it’s fair to ask how difficult it might have been in October for Garcia to walk past Carpenter and tell the skipper he wasn’t sound enough to pitch a big game. If Garcia’s arm is healthy for spring training, his sinker and wide array of off-speed puzzlers will make him an excellent third starter. At this point, though, both his health and his headspace are major question marks.
2012 The youngster in the St. Louis rotation at just 25, Garcia built on his breakout 2010 with another solid season. The sinkerballing lefty stepped into the No. 2 spot in the rotation left vacant when Adam Wainwright had surgery in the spring. Garcia continues to do his best work at Busch Stadium, where he limits opposing hitters to a .230/.280/.320 line. But on the road, opponents rake him at an unsettling .313/.353/.463 clip. Signed to a club-friendly contract extension in July, Garcia should be a mainstay of the Cardinals pitching staff until at least 2015.
2011 Garcia’s rookie season was a revelation, as the young sinkerballer had frustrated batsmen pounding pitch after pitch into the dirt en route to a 2.70 ERA that ranked fourth-best in the National League. Garcia is adept at changing speeds, abetting his late-breaking heater with a cutter, a changeup, and a slow curve that off-balance hitters merely stare at, hoping it misses the zone. Such a wide menu of options means the chance of one pitch going bad on a given day is higher than with most pitchers, but it also makes it harder for the league to catch on to what he’s doing. His walk rate will become a problem if he can’t get the swelling down, but Garcia gives the Cardinals hope that they have found yet another ace to help bandage their rotation.
2010 Garcia lost most of the year to recovering from his September '08 Tommy John surgery, but came back in working order to help Memphis down their PCL title-winning stretch, winning a pair of postseason games. He doesn't appear to have lost any of the late hop on his heat or the bend on his big, looping curve, so he's back on the list of interesting pitching prospects. Barring another Brad Penny-level addition, he'll contend for the fifth slot in the rotation, aided in part in that he'd be the lone lefty.
2009 Jaime Garcia advanced from the 22nd round of the 2005 draft to become the team's best pitching prospect, but he failed to bypass the injury nexus unscathed—late-season elbow trouble led to Tommy John surgery. He was in line to compete for a rotation spot this season, but the sinkerballer will spend all of it rehabbing.
2008 Teams are still wondering how Garcia slipped to the 22nd round of the 2005 draft, because he's become the top starting-pitching prospect in the Cardinals organization. He has a monster curveball and a very good sinker. He also has a weird combination of a better-than-two-to-one groundball-to-flyball ratio and a problem with the long ball. Elbow problems shut him down for the second half of the season, but he didn't need surgery and is expected to be at full strength for 2008.
2007 It`s exciting to glance at the birth years of a high minor league team and find in their midst a relative babe. That will be Garcia at Double-A Springfield this year. Just 20 and on the fast track to NeoBusch, Garcia lacks projection, but he throws a hard sinker that had them killing grubs galore in the low minors.
