2013 Toronto purchased Sean O’Sullivan’s contract from Kansas City in June but, despite a sparkling ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas and the big-league club’s pitching woes, he never threw a pitch for the Blue Jays before signing with his hometown Padres as a minor-league free agent in December.
2012 How thin was the Royals starting rotation in 2011? Thin enough they gave O’Sullivan 10 starts. There’s no mystery here. A 0.73 SO/BB ratio to go along with 10 home runs in 58 innings. He’s destined for a career as Triple-A filler.
2011 The most positive thing you can say about O'Sullivan is that he will be only 23 years old in 2011. The problem is that his youth doesn't mean much, since there isn't a lot of room for growth in this right-hander. O'Sullivan relies entirely on his command, as none of his primary offerings—a 90 mph four-seamer, a sinker, and a change—works as a true out pitch. Major-league hitters have had their way with him in his 135 career big-league innings, as the pitch sequencing that worked so well for him in the minors isn't cutting it now. His rate of home runs allowed per nine innings is higher than his strikeout-walk ratio, so a moderate improvement won't make him very good, even by Kansas City standards.
2010 Once considered the nation's top prep pitching prospect, O'Sullivan lost some velocity, slipped to the third round of the 2005 draft, and remade himself as a finesse pitcher. He's adept at setting up hitters with a three-pitch arsenal consisting of a 90 mph fastball with good movement, a plus curve, and an average changeup, but he lacks a true out pitch. The Angels' rotation injuries fast-tracked him to the majors in mid-June despite just 13 starts and a 5.82 ERA above A-ball, and for awhile O'Sullivan stayed afloat, with a 3.72 ERA through his first five starts. Yo-yo'd back and forth between Salt Lake and Anaheim, he was torched for 20 runs in 14 2/3 innings in August, serving a reminder that he'll need seasoning before becoming a viable rotation regular. Expect to see him back at some point in 2010.
2009 Sean O'Sullivan is a finesse pitcher who struggled in the high-offense Cal League, but scouts still like him as a guy who can throw strikes and keep the ball in the park.
2008 Young Sean O'Sullivan owned the Midwest League, but he's a command guy without a great out-pitch, which limits his upside.
