BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2009 Kyle McCulloch is another of those low-ceiling, right-handed college pitchers with weak peripherals and ground-ball tendencies who will be fortunate to find himself at the back of a rotation someday. He was also the Sox’ top draft pick in 2005. Oof.
2008 McCulloch is the reason that the White Sox overhauled their scouting department before the 2007 draft. They were tired of first-round picks like this-safe, unprojectable, and downright boring. McCulloch is a righthander with an upper-80s fastball, a solid curve, very good command, and an excellent feel for pitching. In other words, he's a classic back-of-the-rotation starter. That's not a horrible thing, mind you, it's just not what you spend your first round picks on.
2007 The White Sox`s top pick in the 2006 draft, McCulloch might be the player who changes the organization`s drafting philosophy once and for all. PECOTA looks at his mediocre peripherals and concludes that McCulloch has virtually no chance to become a plus major league pitcher. Scouts look at a fastball that tops out at 91 MPH and a curve that`s just okay and reach the same verdict. Coming on the heels of similarly low-risk, low-reward selections such as Lance Broadway, Royce Ring, and perhaps Brian Anderson, there`s an increasing sense of buyer`s remorse down at 35th and Shields.
