2011 A college product, Rohlinger has always been a bit old for his leagues, which makes his solid-but-unspectacular career minor-league batting line (.272/.353/.442) less striking. For that reason, the Giants attempted to diversify the third basemanís defensive portfolio in 2009, giving him some exposure at second base and shortstop. The latter worked well enough that Rohlinger spent the majority of his time at shortstop in 2010, making him a rare offense-first utility option for the big club.
2010 As a college player added to the system with a sixth-round pick in 2006, the Giants had to push Rohlinger, and did so in 2008, getting him through two levels, positioning him for a consolidation year in Fresno last season. However well-intentioned, it didn't spare him his seeming destiny: organizational soldier, and a fill-in guy who you don't turn into your everyday third baseman barring a few kidnappings and a permission slip. If he can make the jump to utilityman and adapt to sporadic playing time from the bench, he might make a handy source of some modest sock from the bench. That puts him in a group with Frandsen, Downs, and Velez. You don't get to keep all of them, and Charlotte already spun her web over Velez's locker to let everyone know her favorite to avoid the chopping block.
2009 Yet another over-promoted infielder, Rohlinger didnít impress in the Sally League in 2007, and hit for less power in High-A in early 2008, but after 159 solid at-bats for Double-A Connecticut, he was called up and installed at third base, a solution which lasted all of six starts. An utterly unspectacular player, Rohlinger profiles as something less than a major league starter, which given his almost complete lack of professional experience outside of third base means he may be something less than a major leaguer.
