2009 Things have yet to come together for Donnie Baseballís son Preston Mattingly, a 2006 supplemental first-round pick; he struggled both offensively and defensively while repeating at Great Lakes, and now faces a steep climb to the big leagues.
2008 Finding out that Preston Mattingly isn't a shortstop (.773 fielding percentage in 18 games there last year) wasn't a big surprise to anyone in the Dodgers organization. Finding out that he isn't much of a hitter, either, was. The spitting image of his dad, the new Dodger hitting coach, but significantly bigger, Mattingly was a first-round pick in 2006 because of his bat. In his first full professional season, that bat, which produced a ridiculously pathetic .157/.204/.196 line after the All-Star break, was nowhere to be found.
2007 Donnie Baseball`s kid, Preston Mattingly isn`t the pure hitter his father was, but he`s a bigger, better athlete whose stock skyrocketed just before the draft; the Dodgers took him with a supplemental pick at number 31. Having not seen much pitching outside of Indiana, he took his lumps in his debut, but his plate coverage and wrist speed draw praise. Nobody`s fond of his defense, so first base or leftfield might be his ultimate home.
