BP Annual Player Comments

2013 After an elbow strain knocked him out for most of 2011, Fien (pronounced Feen) didnít even make last yearís book. Not that 28-year-old relievers with 14 innings of major-league experience forced to sign minor-league deals are typically worthy of an entry, mind you, and his omission seemed fairly justified through the first three months of the season as Fien did little to distinguish himself at Rochester. But with a promotion in July, Fien ripped off the best three months of his career and forced himself into the teamís bullpen plans for 2013 as one of the few guys on the staff who can reliably strike batters out. An extreme fly-ball pitcher, Fien is perfectly suited for the spacious Target Field and will be making around the league minimum for the next three years. He canít be trusted to repeat his ridiculous performance, but should be a perfectly serviceable part of the clubís bullpen.
2011 In his Triple-A career, Casey Fien has posted a four-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio with nearly a whiff per inning; released by the Tigers and signed by Houston, itís not unreasonable to think that his fastball/slider/cutter arsenal could find success in the Astros' pen.
2010 Fien (pronounced like "fiend" without the d, not like "fine") is a reasonably good-looking relief prospect, projecting primarily as a middle-innings guy, if there are prospects for that. He was a starter in college and doesn't have the stuff to close, so you don't want to limit him to just one inning. He has a decent fastball, the home-run rate of someone who has trouble keeping the ball down, and a very large on/empty split suggesting problems throwing from the stretch. He struggled his first two months in Toledo (.323/.370/.548), but came on very strong (.197/.246/.303) thereafter.

(Billy from Ocean)
Yeah, he's pretty good. Another good one who you don't talk about unless you're from the Bay Area: Jean Machi (Noah Woodward)
