2013 Clevenger was drafted as a shortstop and started off as a second baseman in the Cubs' system before a manager convinced him that he had a better chance of making it to the majors if he donned the tools of ignorance. It seems to have worked, as Clevenger got a five-plate-appearance cup of coffee in 2011 and spent almost all of 2012 with the big club. With Soto shipped off to the Rangers, Clevenger figures to spend 2013 in Chicago too, battling Castillo for playing time behind the dish.
2012 While Clevenger put up okay numbers at Double-A, he was repeating the level and didn't show any progress from 2010. He draws enough walks and has good contact skills and extra-base power, so he isn't likely to be completely overwhelmed in the majors. But with rough defense and a marginal bat, the primary thing that makes him interesting as a potential backup catcher is that he bats left-handed, while the guys ahead of him on the depth chartóGeovany Soto and Welington Castilloóbat right-handed.
2011 Paired up with Chirinos behind the plate, former infielder Steve Clevenger walloped right-handed pitching (958 OPS) with line-drive sock while throwing out 30 percent of stolen-base attempts; in the Cubs' catching crowd, he might be the one who becomes a deluxe caddy.
2010 Continuing his pattern of mastering a league on the second try, Steve Clevenger raked in the Southern League only to hit an empty .265 in the PCL; on-base skills and a lefty bat mean heíll be given every opportunity to fulfill his backup catcher destiny.
