2013 Former sixth-round pick Jordan Smith didn't have a strikeout pitch in four seasons as a starter and hasn't found one in three seasons as a reliever, averaging 5.8 K/9 for his career in more than 500 innings.
2012 Smith's brief run as a situational sinkerballer may have already shot its bolt. He was out of a big-league job little more than a month into the season, and he later lost time to a sore shoulder. Given the crush of prospects nowhere close to ready on the 40-man, bubble guys like Smith are in particular danger of being squeezed out. There isn't a ton of cause to want Smith in the first place, but the Reds have insisted on carrying him on the 40-man as we go to press.
2011 A severely slipping strikeout rate convinced the Reds to stick Smith in the Double-A bullpen, but that didn't halt the decline. The Reds deemed him major-league material anyway, and summoned him to Cincinnati in mid-June without an intermediate stop in Triple-A. The promotion breathed a modicum of life into his strikeout rate, but he survived on the strength of his ability to keep the ball on the ground and in the zone (though the latter quality made him easy fodder for home-run hitters). Among Reds hurlers with a minimum of 20 innings pitched, Smith trailed only Edinson Volquez and Mike Leake in ground-ball percentage; since his heavy sinker doesn’t miss many bats, his success will always depend on the infield defense behind him.
2010 As a sinkerballer adept at keeping the ball in the park, Jordan Smith would seem to be in the right organization, but his strikeout rate took a tumble last year. If he makes the majors, it's likely to be as a reliever.
