BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 "Killer" Burke’s first full season in A-ball was a revelation, earning him the organization's player of the year award and reminding scouts why the Padres made him a supplemental first-round pick out of a Tennessee high school back in 2006. The toolsy outfielder paced the Midwest League in doubles, hit more than a few homers, drew walks, and showcased a cannon arm tailor-made for right field. If the improved plate discipline and power can be repeated in 2010—a big if given that even after his season, Burke's career rates stand at .255/.347/.407 in 404 games—he could muscle his way far up the prospect charts.
2009 Repeating a cycle of flailing in Low-A followed by modest productivity in Boise isn't propelling Kyler Burke towards a big-league career, but he is the kind of athletic outfielder the organization loves. Even so, he needs to show something resembling progress.
2008 An extremely raw import from the Padres' organization, Burke struggled in the first half of last year following an aggressive promotion to the Midwest League. After the Cubs acquired him in the Barrett deal, they sent him down to the Northwest League, and he rewarded them with flashes of power and plate discipline. His tools are very good, and he bears watching.
2007 A tools-minded pick in the first round of the 2006 draft, Kyler Burke is a Tennessee high schooler long on potential, but with an equally long list of things to work on, such as his approach at the plate and his fielding.

2012-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's the scouting report on Kyler Burke as a pitcher? Could he have a decent major league career?
(Josh from California)
He's been up to 94 and flashes a decent breaking ball. Keep in mind that he's 24 years old and in Low-A before you get too worked up, but he has at least a puncher's chance. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Has the Cubs system taken a big step forward this year? Vitters, Cashner, Carpenter, J. Jackson, Hak-Ju Lee, Starlin Castro, Kyler Burke, Brett Jackson all seem like legit 4* candidates.
(Jon from Rhode Island)
Has the Cubs system taken a big step forward this year? Absolutely. Calling all of those guys 4-star players (Top 100 worthy) is a bit absurd. (Kevin Goldstein)
