2013 Rodriguez and Gio Gonzalez uncorked the same number of wild pitches (10) last year, but while the lefty starter amassed that total over nearly 200 innings, the righty reliever, who also came over from Oakland, did so in fewer than 30. From a pure stuff standpoint, Rodriguez is unparalleled: If you measure effectiveness by whiff percentage, then his fastball, which touches triple digits, is his third-best pitch. But, as the Nationals discovered when they wanted Rodriguez to supplant Storen as their closer, the gas is useless if it doesnít find the tank. Rodriguez had an eventful 2012 on top of the wildness, missing a month after slamming his index finger in a bathroom door, then straining his back, and eventually requiring surgery to remove bone fragments from his elbow. Heíll report to spring training looking for a fresh start and a chance to win back Johnsonís trust.
2012 At some point, Rodriguez is going to find 5 percent more control, and he'll be the toughest guy in the league to face. Of course, that league might be in Italy or something, but it might be MLB. He just throws goddamned hard. Often, the ball travels in the direction of the strike zone. Well, towards home plate, anyway. Rodriguez managed to be somewhat effective in 2011 despite walking 45 batters in just 65 2/3 innings. This was an improvement from some of his memorable minor-league campaign, when he'd walk over a batter per inning as well as actually issuing free passes to vendors, reporters, and the occasional fan. He's a great gamble, though, because some season, he might put it all together, and you end up with a bullpen that causes opposing managers to score Ambien on the street just to keep functioning in society.
2011 Aroldis Chapman received a ton of attention for his fastball last year, but the lesser-known, right-handed Rodriguez's velocity is barely a tick behind. The stocky Venezuelan is guaranteed to hit triple digits nearly every time out, but he rarely knows where his heater is headed, and his slider exists in name only. He was nothing short of outstanding while pitching in his native land over the winter, and those performances, along with his tantalizing velocity, made him the key element in the trade that brought Josh Willingham to the West Coast. With the Nationals, Rodriguez will get a shot to win a late-inning job in the spring, and he's just as likely to save 20 games in The Show this year as he is to spend at least half the season in Double-A.
2010 One of the hardest throwers in the game, Henry Rodriguez might be dangerous if he had any clue where his pitches were going.
2009 Blessed with one of the best arms in the game, Henry Rodriguez constantly hits triple digits with his fastball, the problem being that he has utterly no clue where it is going.
