2012-01-30 13:00:00What do you think the Yankees should do with Phil Hughes and AJ Burnett, assuming Ivan Nova gets a spot in the rotation?
(PJ from Bronx)
You'd think Nova would have earned the spot, though I'm skeptical of his ability to repeat given his low strikeout rate (unless the new ground ball effects persist). Hughes seems likely for the bullpen, and at this point maybe you have to stop thinking about what he was or might have been and accept what he is. I think they really have to look at Burnett as a sunk cost and make him someone else's problem. (Steven Goldman)
2011-07-07 13:00:00Hey Steven. I'm a big Yankees, like I know you are, and I was just thinking about some of the trade rumors swirling around the Yankees, especially Zambrano. Why in the world would we take Zambrano and his 37.25 million dollars over the next two years, when we already have a rotation that's too crowded to begin with! Ivan Nova was just sent down for that very reason. If we really want starting pitching, we can wait for this offseason, when CJ Wilson and Chris Carpenter, or even lower end options like Joel Pineiro and Edwin Jackson will be available, for a lot less might I add. I just don't think now's the time for Big Z in the Big Apple. Your Thoughts?
(Big Bob from Indianapolis)
I know I'm a crazy dreamer, but I'd rather see some of the internal options, starting with the two guys at Double-A, Betances and Banuelos, get a shot before any of the mediocre options you just named. (Steven Goldman)
2011-02-28 13:00:00Ivan Nova, is he underrated? 6'4, 200 pounders who throw in the mid to high 90's are usually talked about more.
(Ryan from NYC)
Nova is not mid to high 90s when he starts, he's more 92-94 with solid but unspectacular secondary pitches. And with all that, I still like him. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-05 13:00:00Assuming Pettitte retires, what do you think will happen to the Yankees rotation? A lot of Ivan Nova and Sergio "Valente" Mitre? The Freddy Garcia Granny Gooden Show? Cashman relenting and trying Joba as a starter? Any chance any candidates among hyped prospects gets called up in the 2nd half after a strong showing in AA?
(Nick Stone from New York City)
Hey Nick! Shifting gears away from the Hall for the next few questions...

If I had to guess I think that barring a winter trade, the Yankees will begin the season by rounding out their rotation with one outside acquisition (Garcia and Jeremy Bonderman being the most obvious options but hardly the only ones) and Nova or Mitre in the five spot, with the other and David Phelps the next lines of defense in case either of those slots need to be filled. Once those possibilities are exhausted, barring some other hotshot from the minors making a case — and I don't think any of the three Killer B's are within half a season's range given that they don't even have much Double-A experience - that's when I think the Yankees will make a major move. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-09-30 13:00:00What do the Yankees do about their postseason rotation? Do they dare start either Vazquez or Burnett? Do they put their faith in Ivan Nova? Does the strategy change depending upon who they're playing?
(Babe Herman from Brooklyn)
At least for the ALDS, Sabathia, Pettitte, Hughes, with Game Four pending 2-1/1-2 situation. Given the off day that follows, I'm OK with starting Burnett on a crazy quick hook. Or really anyone; it's Johnny Wholestaff day. (Joe Sheehan)
2010-09-13 13:00:00Any reason to be worried about Yankees starting pitching come playoff time? Pettitte health, A.J. being A.J., Phil's fall off a cliff, etc? Or am I just overreacting because of how piss poor they played this past week?
(Dick Whitman from Cubicle of Awesome)
I think there's plenty of reason for concern. The Yankee rotation's ERA since the All-Star break is 5.11, and CC Sabathia is the only experienced pitcher who's healthy and pitching up to his skill level. Hughes (5.37), Burnett (5.82) and Vazquez (6.20) have all been awful for the most part, and while Ivan Nova's shown promise, he's got just four big-league starts under his belt. To play deep into October, the Yankees need Pettitte to come back strong AND they need at least one of the aforementioned trio to get their [expletive deleted] together.

On the other hand, their bullpen has rounded into shape, as I wrote at Pinstriped Bible on Friday (http://www.pinstripedbible.com/2010/09/10/good-wood/). (Jay Jaffe)
2010-07-22 13:00:00Yankees fans know what they're getting in Sergio Mitre (the equivalent of a swingman for a non-contending team). Other than experience, is he really a better option than trying out Ivan Nova or even Hector Noesi?
(Ethan from NYC)
What the Yankees need to do is lock in wins. Mitre, for all of his faults, has a narrower band of projected performance than almost any minor league pitcher would. From that standpoint, I think the decision makes sense. They can wait Pettitte's absence out. (Tommy Bennett)
