2003 The longest-tenured Marlin pitcher was unceremoniously dumped on the Rockies as a throw-in on the Charles Johnson trade. Darensbourg has lost a lot of effectiveness since his debut year in 1998, and he’s not cheap. With the inexperienced left-handers in the Colorado pen, Darensbourg should become the primary lefty setup man for them in 2003.
2002 Intentional walks haven't been pulled out of the DTs this year, so that line is a bit deceptive. Darensbourg actually walked just four men in nearly 50 innings last season, the culmination of a steady improvement in his control. It might be too good: he gave up a .541 slugging average to left-handed batters last year. He's one of the keepers in the Marlins pen.
2001 Vic Darensbourg is similar to Billy Wagner in that he’s a short, hard-throwing left-handed reliever. The similarities end there. We typically don’t endorse the LaRussa School of Bullpen Management and its strict late-game platoon matchups, but that’s the only way Darensbourg is effective--his career OPS is 223 points lower against left-handed hitters than righties. Since he was able to keep his roster spot after his wretched 1999 season, I suspect that he’ll be able to do the same next year, too.
2000 Woof. Michael Wolverton’s Reliever Evaluation Tools peg Darensbourg as the worst reliever in baseball in 1999, a neat trick given he threw just 34 2/3 innings. Even with the bad year, his outlook is the same: interchangeable left-handed reliever capable of giving a team 70 good innings. Almanza should reduce his importance.
1999 Broke his pitching hand in ‘97, which led to his dropping off some people’s radar screens, including ours. After a month or two, Leyland figured out that this short lefty’s better off piching an inning or two, instead of being used as a strict lefty-getter. An experiment with starting him in ‘94 led to surgery on his elbow to remove bone chips that cost him all of ‘95. Left in relief, he should be the new Dennis Cook: a strikeout/flyout lefty, good for 70 innings from the pen.
1997 Very similar to Adamson—he’s a left-handed reliever with a favorable platoon split—but the Marlins only need one of these guys. Should make for quite a dogfight in spring training, if the Marlins don’t settle the matter by signing Graeme Lloyd or something.
