2013 Beatoís fastball is fine if not spectacular, and thatís about it. The prize for not releasing Kelly Shoppach outright, Beatoís ability to harness his breaking stuff will be the key to his ability to pitch in the majors long-term. If his history is any guide, donít be optimistic.
2012 It took a long time for Beato to ultimately become a Met. The team drafted him in the 17th round of the 2005 draft, but had problems getting a well-above-slot bonus approved by MLB, and Beato ended up being the 32nd overall pick by Baltimore the following year. He didn't develop, was exposed in the Rule 5, and the Mets scooped him up last December, as he's always been a big guy with some arm strength. While on the surface, it looks like Beato held his own, he really wasn't very good. He started his big-league career with a 0.00 ERA after 12 games and 18 2/3 innings, but he has a 5.84 mark since. Beato's fastball sits in the low 90s, has sink, and can touch 95-96 mph, but it's also the sum of his abilities, as neither his curve nor his slider are good enough for the majors, and unless your name is Mariano Rivera, you need a second pitch. We've seen Mariano Rivera, and you, sir, are not Mariano Rivera.
2011 Pedro Beato last appeared in the 2008 edition of this book. It took the last three seasons for the Oís to give up on the idea of their 2006 supplemental first-rounder as a starter. The overdue move to the bullpen, based on the simple fact that Beatoís breaking stuff has always lagged behind his fastball, paid immediate dividends. The Mets will give him a chance to stick in a wide-open bullpen after selecting him in the Rule 5 draft.
2008 More was expected from Beato in his first full season. A supplemental first-round pick from 2006, Beato was consistently okay last year, but never impressive. That's troubling because organizations want their young pitchers to show some dominant skills which his coaches can then help him figure out how to access repeatedly. Part of Beato's problem was conditioning; he picked up some weight, and that threw off his mechanics, costing him velocity on his fastball and differential on his change.
2007 Beato`s more of a scout`s pick right now than a sabermetric one. He had TJ surgery in 2004, which caused him to drop in the following year`s draft. The Mets ultimately picked him in the seventeenth round, but didn`t want to give him above-slot money, so he went back into the draft last year and the Orioles got him with the 32nd overall pick. He claims to throw six pitches, but he should work on controlling at least one of them well before trying the rest. He`ll be popular if he gets it worked out; Beato`s outgoing, demonstrative, works quickly, and just generally looks like he`s having fun playing baseball.
