YearComment
2013 Taken in the second round of the 2006 draft by the Indians as a catcher, McBride still gets behind the dish a few times a year but is mainly a first baseman/corner outfielder now. He came over in the July 2011 Ubaldo Jimenez trade and features a limited offensive skill set: decent batting average, some doubles, not many walks. He's sort of a weaker-hitting, right-handed version of Robert Fick.
2011 When Matt McBride was an offense-oriented catcher, he was an interesting prospect. As a first baseman, not so much.
2010 Does McBride have Sheryl Crow on his iPod? He seems to have taken her song "A Change Will Do You Good" to heart, because after moving out from behind the plate to protect a sore shoulder, the first baseman/outfielder smacked the ball at Kinston, which earned him a promotion to Double-A. McBride did some catching in the Arizona Fall League, though this is probably nothing more than just making sure that he can still serve as an emergency catcher should the need arise. It's a shame really, as he'd be a nice prospect if he could play the position; at the other end of the defensive spectrum, he's just another guy.
2008 The Indians were pretty excited about McBride as an offensive catching prospect, but his full-season debut left a lot to be desired. He's a good contact hitter who slices a lot of doubles into the gap, but the good things to say about him end there, as he was old for his level, doesn't have a ton of power, and could use a more patient approach. An optimist would say McBride could end up as a good backup, but a pessimist would point out that he's not a terribly good defender, either.
