2007 That almost worked out. Cuban refugee Soler was signed back in August 2004, but visa problems kept him out of the country until November 2005. Soler spent about two minutes in the minors, jumping from Double-A to the majors. Rick Peterson must have sensed that Soler felt intimidated, because prior to his first start he cautioned, `It`s good to have butterflies, as long as they fly in formation to the plate.` Really, no pressure, kid. But Soler felt it, and there were subsequent mumblings from the Mets that he was afraid to challenge hitters. Soler put together three consecutive strong starts in June, then was bombed in his next three and got sent down. After that, Soler was shut down with a strained right calf. With Soler`s stuff and slider, there`s still a high upside here. As we`ve seen with other Cuban imports, finding his comfort level might just be a process of acculturation. Keep in mind that he`s 28 if we credit his listed age, so this is it.
2006 How much is it worth to you to look in the box? Cuban pitchers and their enigmatic possibilities cause palpitations in major league front offices far beyond their actual worth. Thirteen Cuban-born pitchers have landed in the majors since 1995, and only one, Danys Baez, has a career ERA under 4.00. This is not an indictment of Cuban nationals who come here wanting to throw baseballs for a living, but more a cautionary tale about overspending in the hopes of finding the next Luis Tiant. Is this really any different than what happens in the Rule 4 Draft, though? Yes, in that Rule 4 players don`t often get long-term big league contracts right out of the gate. The Mets have yet to see Soler throw in anger, but at least he hasn`t gotten hurt yet. They`ll sort him out in spring training and likely assign him to St. Lucie. In Cuba, Soler was known as `El Minero` (The Miner), a name derived from his birthplace of Minas de Matahambre, in Pinar Del Rio.
