2016 Moylan was hired by the Braves to help coach the Rookie-level Danville affiliate in 2015. Instead, he ended up appearing in 22 games in the majors. That's the result of a good news-bad news scenario. The good news is that Moylan bounced back from a second Tommy John surgery enough to be effective again and earn major-league time. The bad news is that the Braves were desperate enough to give him high-leverage opportunities in September. Moylan threw well, though. He didn't walk anyone in 10-plus innings and induced groundballs by getting the movement back on his sinker. Moylan's career was kaput not long ago, right up until the moment it wasn't. Trying to predict what happens from here is folly.
2014 Peter Moylan logged more innings in 2013 than in the two previous years combined, but three-fourths of those frames were pitched in the minors, and four-fourths of those innings lacked Moylan's previously excellent groundball utility.
2013 Shoulder and back surgeries have limited Moylan to 13 innings over the past two seasons. When he pitches, he generates a high rate of ground balls in the midst of dominating right-handed hitters. The Braves have an in-house alternative in Gearrin, so Moylan’s pending free agency could signal his end in Atlanta. Of course, we wrote the same thing last year and Moylan returned.
2012 Years after washing out of the Twins’ system, Moylan pitched in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. Little known then, Moylan has become a mainstay in the Braves bullpen more than 250 innings later. Ol’ faithful missed most of 2011 while recovering from two surgeries—one to fix a bulging disc, the other to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff. Moylan’s side-arm throwing, groundball-getting ways are a luxury in the bullpen, but the Braves have Cory Gearrin hanging around at a lower cost. A free agent at season’s end, Moylan may continue his great story in another city.
2011 It's just part of the randomness of being a ground-ball pitcher. Moylan gave up a crucial hit in Game Four of the NLDS, but if the ball was just two feet closer to a fielder, it would have been an inning-ending double play and Moylan would be a hero. He was plenty heroic during the regular season, pitching in more than half of the team's games while generating a ridiculous ground-ball ratio of more than four to one. Bobby Cox maximized his value, understanding that he's nothing more than a right-handed specialist who keeps the ball out of the air, and as long as Fredi Gonzalez understands and expects the same, everything will be just fine.
2010 The affable Aussie was downright outstanding in 2007, and after missing most of 2008 recovering from Tommy John surgery, he slowly returned to being downright outstanding again, allowing only two runs in his last 32 appearances. His sinker is among the best you'll find, as he faced 309 batters in 2009 without giving up a home run while compiling a ground-ball ratio of nearly 3-to-1, and despite the surgery, he was durable enough to pitch in 87 games. These kind of pitchers get little attention, but they're worth their weight in gold. Given current gold prices and Moylan's 200 pounds, that would be about $3-$3.5 million, which is about right considering that he's arbitration-eligible.
2009 Aussie WBC reclamation project Peter Moylan had Tommy John surgery last May, but hopes to return before the All-Star break this year.
2008 Moylan owes his well-paying job to the World Baseball Classic. After washing out of the Twins' system a decade ago, Moylan found himself out of baseball and back in his native Australia. He picked up the game again a few years ago, made the Australian national team, and pitched well against Venezuela in the WBC. His ERA last year was artificially low, as a third of his runs allowed were unearned. Still, he's a groundball machine who owns righties and can pitch two days out of three (he had a 1.32 ERA on zero days' rest). He'll make more than $400,000 pretty soon.
2007 Peter Moylan was an amazing comeback story in 2006. Spotted pitching for Australia in the World Baseball Classic, he was subsequently brought back to America for the first time since his days as a Twins farmhand in 1997. The sidearmer flings a decent fastball and slider, but he needs to dramatically improve his control or he`ll be a go-back story in 2007.

2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)So here's the question I asked at the event in Philadelphia last week: What unlikely players, historically or currently, do you personally root for? Jay mentioned Saul Rivera, Steven followed Wayne Tolleson back in the day, for me it was Jacob Brumfield.
(Arthur from Philadelphia)
I was a big, big fan of George Williams, beyond TTO considerations, it was more basically because I sat near his brother and nephews and nieces one game, and I sort of liked the plucky little group of cheeseheads and their happiness over their uncle making it to The Show.

Active, I've become a bit of a silly/irrational fan of Peter Moylan, since he's got the foreign/exotic angle on top of being a side-armer. And as an A's fan, I'm perhaps goofy in that my current favorite Athletic is Kurt Suzuki. (Christina Kahrl)
