DateQuestionAnswer
2011-09-14 13:00:00The Cardinals were generally pilloried for the Rasmus trade, but fact is, Raz hasn't exactly prospered in Toronto so far -- to put it mildly. I know, SSS and all, but might the Cardinals have known something about his prospects that the rest of us don't? Has your opinion of the trade changed at all? (Bonus Q: who made the best and the dumbest deadline deals, now that we've had six weeks to see how they've worked?)
(BillJ from New Mexico)
Bill, you took "small sample size" out of my mouth--I don't think we can read much into the 92 plate appearances Rasmus has had since becoming a Canadian resident. I absolutely think the Cardinals might have known something no one else did, which is something I and other writers noted at the time the deal went down. You could have said the same about the Braves and Yunel Escobar last season, though, and that's worked out pretty well for Toronto. I don't think whatever problems Rasmus experienced in St. Louis were serious enough to prevent him from being an asset on the field.

As for your second question, it's interesting how quickly the perception of the Carlos Beltran trade to the Giants changed. I wouldn't call them dumb for making that deal, based on what they knew at the time (which is the only standard we can fairly apply), but with Beltran breaking down, Wheeler rolling to the end of the season, and San Francisco falling out of the race, you'd have to think Brian Sabean is already regretting that one, if Brian Sabean is capable of lamenting the acquisition of a veteran. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-08-26 16:00:00Does the Braves Front Office have any regrets trading away Yunel Escobar who has been terrific since joining the Jays?
(Zooey from LA)
None. We root for Escobar because we want every trade we make to be win-win for both organizations involved. Alex Gonzalez helped us reach the playoffs last year with his Gold Glove defense and had a huge hit in Game 2 of the NLDS to tie the score. Gonzalez has helped us have a great season again in 2011. Escobar is an extremely talented player and we hope he does well in Toronto and, to his credit, he's shown his 2010 numbers in Atlanta were an aberration.

The interesting thing about that deal, which often goes unmentioned, is the second and third players we got in the trade. Tim Collins, who was used a couple of weeks later to help facilitate a trade for Kyle Farnsworth and Rick Ankiel, has spent the entire 2011 season in the Major Leagues as a left-handed reliever for the Kansas City Royals. The third player, Tyler Pastornicky, projects for us as an everyday shortstop and has hit .315 with 7 HR and 27 SB as a 21-year old in Triple-A. There was a lot more to that trade than just Escobar and Gonzalez. (John Coppolella)
2011-07-21 16:00:00I fantasize of trading Yunel Escobar for Adam Lind...should I try to make it a reality or is it too far fetched of a dream?
(Justin from Tinley Park)
Unless I'm really desperate for a shortstop, I am not making that deal. The worse the guy can say is no, but that's a run production drop-off he/she might not want to take in the stats at this point of the season. (Jason Collette)
2011-06-20 14:00:00With all the hitting coaches being fired, when will Larry Parrish be shown the door by the Braves? He's taken one of the best offenses from last season, had Melky Cabrera withdrawn and Dan Uggla added, and has turned them into one of the worst this season.
(Nick Carter from London)
It's never clear how much impact a hitting or pitching coach can have on a team, so it's very tough to lay their problems at the feet of one, not that they don't as a means of scapegoating somebody when things get rough. Did Parrish tell Uggla to start swinging with his eyes closed? Did he trade Yunel Escobar for the hacktastic Alex Gonzalez? Did he drive Nate McLouth's career off a cliff? Cause Jason Heyward's injury woes? Force anyone to play Jordan Schafer?

The bottom line is that I'm very skeptical the Braves' offensive woes owe much to Parrish, though I suspect they'll make an example of him anyway if their fortunes don't turn. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-10-12 12:00:00I enjoyed your article on Brooks Conrad today. It made me start wondering what they do with their infield next year. What do you think the Braves do next year, assuming Jones comes back? Do they bring back Gonzalez, or go with Prado/Infante up the middle and do they give Freeman an opportunity to play 1st?
(Shane from Miami)
Thanks. I think it's pretty unlikely Chipper comes back. If it were me deciding, I'd play Freeman at 1B, Prado at 2B, Infante at SS, and a free agent at third. Although I will say the Yunel Escobar trade still doesn't make sense to me. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-07-22 13:00:00Hi Tommy, thanks for the chat. How do you like Yunel Escobar going forward for the next few years? Do you think he can put OBPs in the .370 range and SLG % in the low .400s?
(Dennis from LA)
Yes, that is exactly what I think. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-05-11 16:30:00So far it has been a rough fantasy season for me. I have had 5 players hit the DL already (Miguel Montero, Aaron Hill, Yunel Escobar, Carlos Beltran and Brad Hawpe). So I am playing with a lot of replacement level players. My main question is, should I keep Gordon Beckham and Jason Kubel? They have been in tremendous slumps. and if so, who should I replace them with? Is Ryan Ludwick a better option in the outfield? Please help.
(csatte1 from Baltimore, MD)
Gordon Beckham really seems like a young hitter who is adjusting. His BABIP is low because if too many grounders and pop-ups, but he should work that out. Jason Kubel just isn't hitting the ball as hard as last year. Fewer balls hit to the outfield, fewer HR. He's probably working out kinks in his swing, but I can't imagine he's as valuable as Beckham, even though I don't do fantasy baseball so I don't really know league scarcity that well. Ryan Ludwick seems he's just a little less patient hitter with maybe a little more power. Not sure how that plays in here. I guess Ludwick is better especially with Kubel needing to work out some kinks. (Matt Swartz)
2010-03-04 13:00:00OK, so some sight that shall remain nameless rated Elvis Andrus as a better fantasy SS than Yunel Escobar. Is that that the most rediculous ranking you've seen? Or is there another that really blew you away?
(biglou115 from Arkansas)
I can see why they would do it--they probably expect more power from Andrus than last year, and with his stolen bases and the Rangers lineup you can argue he'll add to a few categories, but I like Yunel more, so I don't buy that argument.

There has to be something more ridiculous out there though, since I can justify that whether I agree with it or not. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-17 16:00:00What do you expect from Yunel Escobar this year for fantasy? I have a hole at SS in my keeper league and I picked him up on the last day of last season to hold for a possible starter role for this season.
(southsidepride from IL)
I think he's solid but unspectacular. I like the Braves to score a decent number of runs, so his counting stats should be respectable. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-01-21 13:00:00Who will be more valuable this season at SS? Yunel Escobar, Alcides Escobar, or Everth Cabrera?
(Ozzie Smith from HOF)
I wish it would be Everth Cabrera, but it's going to Yunel Escobar. I like Alcides potential quite a bit, but if we're talking 2010 then I'm going with the good Yuni. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-13 13:00:00Do you see further growth and offensive upside for a player like Yunel Escobar? Seems like scouts either love him or think we have seen the best already.
(Artie from NJ)
I think there is probably a little bit more there. I'm not convinced he is going to be a superstar but I think he can have a good career. (John Perrotto)
2009-12-09 13:00:00Who do you like better, Yunel Escobar or Elvis Andrus?
(Matt from SD, CA)
Elvis, for the glove and youth. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-11-24 13:00:00Say you've just entered an 8 team strat league and said league is doing a total redraft. Assuming Hanley and Tulo are the first two shortstops to be drafted, which shortstop would go third? Obviously present and future value count.
(Aunt Jemima from Atlanta)
The Shortstop from your location - Yunel Escobar. (Eric Seidman)
2009-11-17 14:00:00Has anyone credible seen Chapman hit 99 mph as some reports are saying? i can just see him coming to the U.S.and working 91-92 mph. The next Cuban defector plays up to 60% of his hype level will be the first.
(mafrth77 from Boston)
Kendry Morales and his .924 OPS say hello, as does Yunel Escobar. To answer your quesiton, Chapman has pitched in many international tourneys in front of many credible folks. He is not a myth. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-10-23 16:00:00How would you compare these three middle infielders, Maicer Izturis, Erick Aybar and Yunel Escobar? They all had similar years offensively, but I don't know much about their defense or the chance of stardom.
(Wendy from Madrid)
Yunel has the potential to hit 27-32 home runs in a season whereas the other two seem more likely to fall in that .355/.435 range, which is nothing to scoff at, but Yunel certainly has a better chance at becoming an all-star and big bopper than the other two. Defensively, Aybar does a lot right with the glove but makes some mental mistakes that one would hope will gradually cease to occur. I'd order them Escobar, Aybar, Izturis. (Eric Seidman)
2009-08-05 13:00:00no opinions on Yunel Escobar :( ?
(makewayhomer from Boston)
I like Escobar a lot actually. I wish his defense graded out a bit better, but he's got a pretty good bat at SS, some pretty good contact skills, and can take a walk and control the strike zone. His D isn't bad by the way, I just wish it was better so he was a more complete package. I'm greedy. (Marc Normandin)
2009-07-09 13:00:00In your notes last week you wrote ... "The Braves would definitely trade shortstop Yunel Escobar, who has exhausted manager Bobby Cox’s deep reservoir of patience." What is it about Escobar that is so frustrating to Cox? -- Thanks
(jon from Seattle)
His very inconsistent approach to playing the game hard. Some days, he is there mentally; other days, he isn't. There also some in the Braves' organization who privately question his ability to play through even the slightest bit of physical discomfort. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-04 13:30:00If you were Cardinals GM John Mozeliak, would you trade Ryan Ludwick for Yunel Escobar and, presumably now that Greene is there, put him at second base? Interesting and highly-rumored potential deal.
(Chuck from Chicago)
In general, I would trade Ryan Ludwick. His value will never, ever be higher, and if you can get, forget Escobar, but even Kelly Johnson and a stocking stuffer, you make that deal. Easy. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-11-24 15:00:00Would Teheran, Rohrbough, Yunel Escobar and the pick of Gorkys or Schafer be enough to make me a Brave? Is this package better than what the Orioles got for Bedard? It does look better than the Twins package for Santana
(peavy from SD)
I think if the Braves made that offer, the Padres would be thrilled. That's a great package: a pre-arb quality starting shortstop, a center fielder who can step in and start this season, and a pitching prospect in Teheran who Kevin Goldstein said has a higher ceiling than any pitcher in the Braves system. I think that's as good or maybe a bit better than what the O's got, but Peavy is also better than Bedard, and I'm higher on Escobar than most, probably. I don't think the Braves should give up that much, and from what I've read Peavy doesn't want Escobar to be leaving if he's coming. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-11-14 13:00:00Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, Charles Morton and a lefty reliever for Jake Peavy seems basicaly to me like giving Escobar for Peavy who is a very cheap superace for 4-5 years. Is it a good or bad deal for the Braves?
(JOHN54 from Alabama)
I think you're being a little too harsh on Morton, and Gorkys, um... has a great name and could be, er, sort of a fourth OF. It's not a great return, you're right. It was a more exciting deal with Tommy Hanson as part of it. It's a good deal for the Braves. I've written elsewhere (tho' I'm not the only one) to suggest that Peavy's H/R splits suggest he is overvalued to some degree, and no doubt that figures in.

I'm so certain I typed "sex" in that last entry, but it came out "self." And you know what? Self-life is a really interesting concept that I like even better. (Steven Goldman)
2008-05-29 13:00:00Two months into the season, Yunel Escobar is looking like a Gold Glover with a solid bat. Is he still just playing over his head, or is he more a solid regular type with maybe a couple of all-star appearances in peak years?
(Matt A from Raleigh)
He's come down a bit after the hot start, so I want to see more. My sense remains that he's going to be stretched at shortstop, physically. He looks to me like someone with the bat for shortstop and the glove for third. How his defense plays out--and at this point, it's a hard thing to evaluate--will be the difference. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-05-09 14:00:00christina what's going on with jj hardy? he's been pretty mediocre since this point last year. his numbers suggest that he's not overmatched at the plate, but his power has completely disappeared. thanks!
(bobby from ann arbor)
I think it's a matter of too-high expectations. He's a perfectly fine starting shortstop with decent power, but he isn't going to be among the league's very best. I think we need to accept that "the trinity" of the '90s was an anomaly, and that a world in which we have merely very good players at shortstop--like Khalil Greene, or Hardy, or Yunel Escobar--populate most rosters. It still beats having to see Johnny LeMaster play. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-31 13:00:00Better offensive numbers this year, Stephen Drew or Yunel Escobar?
(Alberto from Boston)
Aargh. PECOTA says Drew. I'm not a big believer in either, but I think that Drew is more likely to go up and Escobar more likely to go down, so let's go with Drew. (Steven Goldman)
